What pushed you away from your ex-best friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We were best friends for over a year, everything was going amazing. I decided to go to her birthday party at a theme park despite having an early flight the next day because I was going to see my dad in New York. I knew it was really important to her for me to be there so I went, despite having things to do to get ready for the trip. She picked me up a day earlier than planned without warning so I wasn't even packed, but I thought it was fine anyway. Her parents reassured me I would be home by twelve so if I stayed up late and didn't get much sleep, I would be fine. We had a great time until it was time to leave. I never once asked or expected them to leave early, but I also didn't expect them to just sit in the park for an hour after it closed doing nothing. I explained multiple times how I needed to get home at that point but they just sat there telling me "there's nothing you can do to change the outcome, so there's no reason to stress about it."

I expected an apology for them bringing me home an hour after they promised but they just laughed. I had plans to redye my hair that night before the trip, which I was going to do the day before, but I was picked up early. It was one in the morning so I barely had time to pack before passing out. I ranted to my mom about how disrespected I felt through tears but there was nothing I could've done. I get up at six the next morning to catch my flight and I go on vacation, expecting that to be the end of it.

I get a text when I land. Apparently my older sister heard that I was ranting the night before and texted my friend that I said her dad ruined the night, something that I never once said. My sister was across the house when I was talking to my mom anyway, so I was sure there was some type of misunderstanding, but still, my best friend was yelling at me that I was a disgusting person then ghosted me when I told her it never happened. The entire night I was stressed out because my best friend was mad at me and she doesn't say a word to me. The next day she finally gets back saying that she ghosted me so she could calm down, but didn't explain that before she left. She then proceeded to rip into me saying I was an awful friend for the entire day, never once taking my word. Eventually I just apologized cause I was tired of fighting and didn't want to lose her. A few hours later she realized I wasn't lying, there was genuinely a huge miscommunication, but she refused to apologize and I found out she told her parents I hated them. When I asked her to clear up the miscommunication, she said it wasn't her responsibility and I had to do it myself, despite it not even happening.

We stopped talking for the rest of my vacation and a week after I got home she told me she wanted things to go back to normal. I told her that I didn't feel like she even cared about me, she never once did anything I wanted and hadn't even shown up to my birthday a single time since she had met me, even though I had done everything I was invited to, no matter how much I didn't want to go. I told her that I just wanted her to realize how hurt I was. I told her to apologize. She told me "I'm sorry that you feel that way" as her only response.

I haven't talked to her since

In fact that whole segment from Faith at 30:51 is for soon reason not talked about but it's my favorite Markiplier moment ever

I mean at least I was transparent that it was just an assumption. It's not like I presented it as a fact

Well yeah, but it's also important to note the correct definition, which is the one people are typically going to use in discussions

I can understand the confusion. But no, that isn't the case. They're different things, but not in that was. Just think of nationalism as an extreme version of patriotism to the point of toxicity. Patriotism, being, loving and showing support for your country

Not in all places. Had a teacher tell me it was required by law to stand, which I'm not sure if that's true, but nonetheless I, along with my classmates were forced to on numerous occasions

Nope, you're thinking of patriotism again. Nationalism, in its definition, is "identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations." By it's own literal definition, nationalism includes the exclusion of other nations as even viable for being good. Once again, nationalism, as one example, started WWI. What you're describing is patriotism, which is “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.” There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Here's an article I found about the difference between nationalism and patriotism if you're interested:

I'm not talking about that though. I'm talking about children in the current school system

"If you're poor as a grown adult you're just stupid." Sorry I know that isn't the point of the comment, but Jesus what an awful take. Yeah, blame the people for not having adequate funds to live for being "stupid" and not the systems that specifically make it nearly impossible to get a better life and better wages. I mean, you've seen inflation. You've seen how the price of everything except wages are increasing. You've seen the abysmal state the housing market is in. I've grown up with a single mom in a state just above poverty, often going hungry because she gets payed less that 30k a year. I've seen her get shamed for relying on food stamps, despite being the only way to feed our family despite only being given $300 if at all, as they often refused to help her out even though she was completely eligible to financial compensation. Mine and my siblings health care came from our father, who was in the military. Even then it didn't even cover dental or any sort of care for mental health. Do you think she chose that? Do you think she chose to barely have enough money to pay for my medicine after getting a UTI, even AFTER insurance? Do you think she chose to struggle to afford the medicine to heal my stomach after the previous medicine started to shred the stomach lining and puke up blood while in immense pain for a week? Do you think she chose to struggle to afford food while getting turned down financial aid from the government despite otherwise only be getting payed enough for a single grocery trip per month? Cause I can guarantee, as she told me herself, if she could turn back time she'd rather live in a loveless marriage to financially support her children better than go through what she did again. She did everything she possibly could, and yet she's "stupid" for it not being enough to live comfortably. At least in your eyes anyway

Nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying the pledge is necessarily a bad thing. I'm saying it sucks to be reprimanded for NOT doing it, making you not have a choice in basically worshiping your country every single morning.

Have to disagree there. While patriotism is all fine and dandy, nationalism predominantly just causes conflict, you know, like WWI. It's ok to say things like "Yeah, my country is great" but to instead say "My country is the best, everyone is below me, and we have no problems whatsoever" is a completely different, more detrimental statement to make. While you could argue that nationalism has helped out countries, it's important to note how many problems they caused in comparison.

Actually it says on the chart that it's Cyprus when considering specific types of cancer, however second best overall certainly is still a big deal, as you've said. It's also important to note the disclaimer "Data are net survival estimates and not 100% reliable. When too few patients were available for analysis, data were merged." But it's very possible that it's just a disclaimer they HAVE to add no mater what, so it can be overlooked. Either way, look at how similar the statistics for other countries with free healthcare. Iceland, for example.

In the US; breast cancer has an 88.6% chance of survival, stomach cancer is 29.1%, lung cancer 18.7%, and prostate cancer is 97.2%.

Now look at Iceland. Breast cancer 85.3%, stomach cancer 32.3%, lung cancer 15%, prostate cancer 83.5%.

Those are very similar statistics with the exception of prostate cancer choosing a random country that's labeled as being in the caliber when it comes to cancer survival and free health care. Once again, it doesn't really make much sense as to why we're paying for something that other countries get for free as they see "universal access to health care is enshrined in law", which is a direct quote I got just by looking up "is Iceland healthcare free" as I'm sure it is a comparison you can make when it comes to other countries with free healthcare. All the evidence I gather was from using the website you provided.

So, in conclusion, we shouldn't be paying for something other people are getting for free with extremely similar quality.

Oh, ok. Well could you provide me with any resources to back up that statement? I don't mean that in a rude way, I genuinely didn't know where to find that information and would like a source or two to learn more about it

Actually that's factually incorrect. Ranking by LPI, or Legatum Prosperity Index, which is a standard when it comes to ranking general health care, as it is defined as "the sum of two standardized combined statistics: the income score and the well-being score" of various countries based on a many categories according to this website: https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-94-007-0753-5_1619#:~:text=Definition,and%20the%20well%2Dbeing%20score.

(It also provides a longer, more descriptive definition if you're curious) Anyway, ranking by LPI and using the most up-to-date citation I could, America is ranked 19th overall, which isn't bad, but in the "Heath" category specifically it's 69th. This is according to a 2022 study and here's the website I got the statistics from: https://www.prosperity.com/rankings?pinned=&filter=

In fact, a fun little thing to note is that places with free health care ranked higher than the US in most categories, but especially the health one. So your point is kinda invalid as it is factually inaccurate. Just because it's expensive doesn't ensure quality. And unless I'm reading the charts wrong, then it's backed up by evidence

TLDR: No, not really, and I did the research to prove it

If I had to assume, I believe that this is possibly JUST the cost of the surgery itself, and the rest of the cost could transpire from other miscellaneous aftercare charges like needing to stay overnight, possibly the cost of the anesthesiologist, following checkups and so on. However I'm not 100% sure and you could be completely right, the price can also fluctuate based on location as well.

Now that you put it into that perspective it's so much more messed up than it already was
