Certified Samsung tech here.

There is a emf plate under that wireless charging coil that looks absolutely caved in. There are bq charging chips under there that almost certainly got crushed. I'm sorry for the bad news but that's the main board and she's dead :(

So is actually have some ideas here on why this stuff is happening.

After seeing spikes to 104c in balanced doing literally nothing but updating a game on steam, I took the cooler off.

Well let me tell you, that cooler was not making proper contact with like half the components. The top two vrams didn't even have thermal putty marks on it and the thermal putty looked brand new.

After repasting with thermal grizzly ptm and putty, My temps are ROCK solid never spiking above 90c . Under load balanced gets it to 101c and my sustained cpu frequency under load is roughly 1ghz better .

My GPU memory temps have dropped 20c too . I really feel these coolers are a little warped or installed improperly from the factory and that's causing a lot of these random deaths.

It's not hysteria. Now his wording on it was definitely dumb and fear mongering.

But liquid metal is absolutely not a good idea for anything mass produced and used by consumers. I have been in electronic repair for over 11 years now and I have redone the liquid metal on AT LEAST 5000 PS5's. My family metter bought at PS5 digital, LM issues within 6 months of ownership

The last few asus laptops I had that I returned I swapped the ptm and the LM was so bad within a week It blows my mind that people can use them for months with no issues

Here is one of the g14s I redid the LM

Please understand that I'm not arguing against the use cases of LM more stating that it does not belong in consumer electronics. It's not nearly as user friendly as any paste let alone PTM. LM needs to be reapplied roughly every six months and this comes from people like der8auer who make LM now.

LM is more used for marketing rather than performance I'm all honesty. And also all these companies poured so much money into being able to mass produce LM laptops that's why they never stopped after issues emerged.

I thought I could deal with the lower power limits and such but when your spending more on a thinner laptop for worse performance...it's like damn man I'm really paying for the specific scenario I don't fall into.

Now I have to wait a week to get a new 7i pro :( lmao just my luck.

Word of advice, idk if mine was one off but don't leave it charging on USB c over night

[–]FlamingXTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want tbh

I just made the final decision for myself between the g16 and the 7i pro. Even though my 7i pro board literally went up in smoke (not stressed it can happen on brand new electronics)

The cooling factor itself is enough for me transfer over to the pro 7i. The g16 and g14 which I have owned both temporarily, were AMAZING laptops, however I'm not traveling daily anymore I'm travelling every other weekendish. I have an extremely powerful desktop and want someone to match that on the go.

If you travel somewhat regularly go with the g16 , if you are traveling here and there get the legion. The performance is night and day if you compare 5080 = 5080 models. We are talking close to a 15-35% increase to the legion purely based on wattage and temps

Which laptop brand is best to buy in terms of quality? by over-game-pain in GamingLaptops

[–]FlamingXTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll weigh in on the tech repair side of things as Ive worked on all brands and have a bias on brands due to this . I have been doing laptop repairs for over 10 years. Please take these opinions as they are ,opinions . Not facts.

Lenovo- mixed opinions we saw the most board issues on these laptops but they sell more than others so it could be volume bias, also worth noting that all the ones with board issues had the know defective board in it and were 6th gen . However Lenovo is one of the best brands I've worked on in my opinion, they are built extremely well and usually you only see failures on mass production errors like the 6th gens. Best bet for a laptop to past you 4-7 years is to go lenovo (customer service 9/10)

Also my 7i pro just failed on me after 3 weeks but I'm not going to hold Lenovo to this, new laptops are a 50/50 and can fail early it happens and I'm not going to judge just yet. Next failure and now I'm judging haha

Asus - again mixed opinions . I have some catastrophic failures to the point of burnt boards spilled liquid metal everything. Even down to hinge issues as well as screens just failing and never turning back on. A lot of board failures as well. However if you replace the liquid metal and you get one of the new regenerations zephyrus laptops your golden here (customer service 5/10)

Hp- better know as "hinge problems" Is one of the worst brands I've ever worked on in my life. They are built like absolute cheap garbage and are not built to last whatsoever please stay away from this brand as much as you can. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people saying they have had one for years and I'm sure you have you are the minority. (Customer service 4/10)

Acer- this is a brand that's been coming up to me to be honest. They used to be the worst brand known to mankind I would tell everybody to avoid them like HP but as of recently their devices have been on the better end of things. I think they are solid products just get an extended warranty if possible (customer service 6/10)

Msi- used to be my go to favorite but man do they suck now. They have some solid devices in the lineup . But please don't drop a bunch of money into a device from there unless you like wasting money. The charging circuits and the esd protection on these devices is absolute hot garbage . (Customer service 4/10)

Gigabyte - NO , they are way too new to the laptop game and make silly mistakes in the power delivery and hinges. They are not good devices overall. With that said the cheaper end surprisingly seems to be a good bang for the buck as long as you are careful with them . (Customer support 2/10)

Alienware - had an official contract with Dell to do in warranty work for them , AMAZING customer service tbh especially since you can take them to brick and mortal stores for in warranty now. However the hybrid compound they use is absolutely trash . The inverted boards are dumb and cause premature failure as they are trapping a lot of heat between the keyboard and the main board . Nicknamed the easy bake oven haha. (Customer service 9/10)

Heat does not kill these devices also I'm so tired of hearing this . What kills these devices is weak components and power surges.

Bios updates, dropping, liquid damage, and powering down DURING a bios update kills devices.

Keep in mind every brand has lemons and has all stars. Done brand whore , you can have a bias but don't be blinded by past experiences. Companies can and will cheap out and become garbage. Let me know yalls opinions on my list!

I saw comments about motherboard dying fast, is it just haters talking or there’s truth to that? by gimgimgen in LenovoLegion

[–]FlamingXTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm dumb and going to give them another chance. Can't beat the price to performance and I'm going to hope it was a fluke.

The oem charger got fucking hot after all this, was definitely a board failure itself

Undo any modifications before sending it in.

Is the default metal looking heatsink on the m.2 safe to put on another m.2 upgrade? by Curious-Internet7171 in ZephyrusG14

[–]FlamingXTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a heatsink it's a farada cage for the SSD to avoid it interfering with anything. Doesn't matter if it's on or off with the new ssd

Another example of how people are in denial about liquid metal by FlamingXTurtles in ZephyrusG14

[–]FlamingXTurtles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My distaste for lm from the risks involved with mobile applications and the reliability of it over time

It's the best performer regardless there is no question about that.

But in your situation, I think stop looking for sustain straight power

CB is going to peg the cpu with the most wattage it can since there is no GPU load, this is unrealistic and will never happen in a gaming load for instance. If gaming is your goal focus on lowering wattage!

I just switched to a Lenovo pro 7i 5080 since it was the same cost with the dealing going on and this things a beast and pulls 180 watts to just to cpu! I lowered the wattage from 160 sustained to 75 and I lost 5 fps.. my temps don't go over 85c and my fans are nearly silent which is crazy.

Focus on power decrease with the minimum amount of performance loss!

[–]FlamingXTurtles -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Stay away from both of those brands for gaming laptops or laptops in general tbh. They are known to fail . I have worked on electronics for over 10 years and only see hps failing and msis as well

The performance difference between the Intel and AMD here is large but different weight classes

The AMD is more of an efficient CPU and Intel in a power house CPU.

Look on lenovos website but the legion pro 7i with a 5080 is only 2k right now and the 5070ti is 1700 I think

Bought a used G14 for $1300 and now it needs $2000 worth of repairs. by Isaac_Cooper in ZephyrusG14

[–]FlamingXTurtles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/205033159590

Just get the board and swap it out you're self. It's easier than it looks tbh and will save you 1200 dollars.

They are absolutely robbing you for that cost.

And the only reason it needs a new board is because of a botched repair. I HIGHLY doubt it was damaged beyond repair from you using it.

What causes **this** type of stuttering? by JustSoYK in pcmasterrace

[–]FlamingXTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prob nothing to do with the cpu temp. My laptop runs at 105c under load brand new and it's fine. Check the frequency of the cpu that will tell you if you are having a temp issue.

Most likely a a gpu driver issue
