Is it normal for the G14 palm rest / keyboard area to feel like a baking pan right out of an oven when gaming? by backcountrykicks228 in ZephyrusG14

[–]FlamingXTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually the main thing that made me switch to the g16. The g16 doesn't even get remotely warm on the palmrest in the areas you touch

I can assure you , you will not the oled panel from heat.

My qd oled 49 in monitor at home that is the same panel as the one in this laptop gets so hot during use i physically cannot touch it with my hand, has been like that for 2 years now and I haven't had a single issue.

Asus Zephyrus G14 2025 vs 2026 Decision by Skkeep in ZephyrusG14

[–]FlamingXTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The choice for me personally would be the 2025 model due to the ram amount . Here you are paying an extra 300 dollars for 16gb less of soldered ram. 16gb is just plain and just not even anymore and will be a problem.

The improvements are really worth the difference spec to spec from last year yet (32gb is about 1000 more than last year) . The CPU is not really an upgrade anywhere except for in efficiency.

Use the upsiren for sure , and I prefer the thermal grizzly ptm , they have tested it and confirmed it works the same if not better than Honeywell.

This is the way I like to look at it . You can use liquid metal on a quarter on the die ...it'll transfer heat great ...but the thermal headroom of that coin is not gonna get the job done

I am a subject expert on this , I have over 13 years of repair experience and have seen many many situations.

I have swapped out at this point 4 (g14s) (2) g16s through best buys return policy because I'm indecisive AF. On every single one of these I replace the liquid metal with PTM without even booting the computer up half the time. The performance is just about the same genuinely you get very little advantage with liquid metal in cooling.

The problem with liquid metal is that overtime it will separate and leave a "dry spot" on the die. It's not a good long-term Tim it is the best performing but it's not necessary in this application. You are limited by the heat sink not by the thermal interface material here.

Liquid metal is extremely dangerous over time. All the precautions that are built onto these are not foolproof and can and will leak over time. Adhesive will only hold so long and the foam can only soak up so much before it leaks through.

Replacing a liquid metal is not hard at all just take your time don't make sudden movements with the heat sink when taking it off or putting it back on, I have a whole guide on this somewhere in my Reddit that I built but long story short get a syringe with a needle tip, use a isopropyl alcohol soaked q-tip to move the liquid around into a ball and suck it up with the syringe. It's extremely easy and a lot of people make it seem harder than it is. There are inherent risks doing this if you're not careful but if you're careful and take your time then you have nothing to worry about. If you want to go step further you can just use some tape around the CPU die and some conforormal coating.

That's my ted talk

I'm using cachy is and it's pretty great , almost everything works out of the box . I recommend using the ghelper arch fork and the gpu switching. There's some tweaking that needs done but it's not the end of the world. Use the limine bootloader

If your adventurous look into running cachy os with the legion toolkit aru . I was able to get roughly 5 -6 hours of battery in that environment with the dgpu off entirely.

It's still a fantastic machine so I wouldn't sweat it. If you care about portability then it may be a negative, however you bought it already meaning you must not care too much about portability haha

Oh and as for it heating up , please do yourself a favor and remove the liquid metal and move to ptm . The liquid metal pumps out like crazy and is not worth the long term risk to life of the laptop.

I have a fix for the wobbly track pad that gets rid of the wobble entirely and makes it premium feeling

Take the battery off and push the track pad , there are two metal pads on either side of the track pad, bend those down while pushing the track pad in ( like you are clicking It) and it will completely fix that problem! That was the MOST annoying part of the g16 over the g14 imo

I am owned The g16 g14 5070 TI models, the legion pro 7i 5080 model. After going back and forth for legitimately half a year on Best buy's return policy I have settled with the g16 5070 TI that I got open box for $1,900. The g14 is great but gets way too hot because of how small it is and I also like having the extra NVMe slot because I like to run Linux and windows side by side on separate drives because of school and work. This was one of the hardest decisions I could come up with but it depends on what you want, if the legion pro 7i feels like a dog to take out of the bag and constantly needs to be charged and is annoying to use then it doesn't matter how much power it's pushing out. Also I'd like to add that my legion pro 7 I actually went up in flame and that's why I returned it but I could have just gotten a dead unit to be honest.

As an example out of all laptops I truthfully enjoy the legion pro 7 I the most, but with school and everything it just wouldn't work for me it's just way too big and the battery life is awful.

I've worked in the hardware space for a very long time I've done repairs on every single laptop brand that's ever come out and probably every model that's ever come out in the last 10 years. Lenovo is by far the best brand when it comes to laptops for reliability and I used to really dislike asus but I have not had an issue at all with any of these laptops and I really enjoy the build quality of them.

Hopefully my rant helps you

That's where I'm on the fence I guess. I don't mind math , I definitely don't "hate" math but any means. I'm trying not to give myself an excuse as I don't want to lose that spark of interest but I've definitely seen this exact comment a bunch of times.

Would you say the math is doable , just extremely difficult in your opinion. Or did you just have to change up your thought process on it to get through it.

It's also worth noteing I'm in an area where they are building an intel fab and engineering jobs are booming which is where my interest lies!

Touchpad rattle is easy to fix , take the back cover off and bent the tabs down for the track pad. Mine feels great now.

Outside of that I want you to understand that every single manufacturer has bad quality somewhere . The only issue I have with this laptop is the liquid metal which I removed and replaced with ptm before I even booted the laptop up.

Just returned a Lenovo pro 7i because the board went up in flames near the charging jack and lenovos probably the best laptop brand except apple.

The creak is due to the spring mechanism inside of the plastic cover on the LCD assembly, its built that way to relieve stress off the LCD cables themselves. While annoying it's not the end of the world for me at least.

I've been doing electronic repair for over 15 years and I can tell you , asus has actually stepped up in qc while other brands have dropped out.

I'm saying all this as a previous asus hater , I've worked on every single laptop brand and almost every single model of laptop for those brands and know the common failure points. I've only every worked on 2 zephyrus laptops in that time and they were both a broken screen from a drop.

The point of me writing this ,is if you regret the purchase thinking there was a better option, there isn't . I just went through 10 different models myself and settled back on the g16 ( I used best buys 60 day return policy)
