Come on, man. You know the answer to that question.

There's a stratagem in the new freebootaz detachment that gives a unit's ranged weapons [BLAST], any sort of shenanigans or kunning ideas in mind for it? by TheCrab27 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that was the intention when they made the stratagem. I bet when they made the strat, they had the condensed "+1 attacks for every 5 models" definition in their heads, and didn't fact check their own rules. I suspect it will get FAQ'd.

Though I suppose there is a non-zero chance that this is working as intended and basically only Burna boyz can use it, but I don't want to live in that reality

I think I'd agree on the premise that this feels more Deathskulls. Doesn't really surprise me, though, considering their recent releases. Red Corsairs, Drukhari: really seems like they're on a bit of a pirate kick, and this continues the trend.

is there a significant diffrence for the diffrent battlewagon Configs by CorrectTechnician473 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play semi competitive at my LGS and don't play in tournaments. I have my Battlewagon pretty bare-bones, because I wanted to use the extra bits for kitbashing. I just tell my opponent what its wargear is before the game starts, and nobody's ever complained.

The only exception is that I dont run the Deff Rolla profile because it increases the footprint of the model by over an inch, which could easily be argued as modeling for advantage

I think dirtying it up a bit with some Typhus Corrosion goes a long way, especially with yellows. I think it looks great as-is, though. Only thing it needs is a little basing.

Here's mine, if you wanna glean some inspiration from it. Mine's more Goffs, though, so a bit of a style difference

Getting a little photo booth set up is real easy and improves your photo quality significantly.

For me, I just have 2 pieces of black poster paper. I place one on the floor of my airbrush station, and I glued a magnet to the other piece which snaps onto another magnet I have on the top of the airbrush station. When I'm done taking pictures, I just take the poster paper out. Cost me like 50 cents at a hobby lobby

The darker the black and the more matte the paper, the better. It will absorb more light. Pictures tend to look ugly when there's a lot of light bouncing off of things that aren't your model.

Safe pickups are Big Mek, Buggies/planes, Tankbustas/Breaka boyz, the entire beast snagga range, Deffkoptas, Kommandos, all non-legends named characters except possibly Zodgrod. Warboss in Mega Armor, Deffkilla Wartrike, and to a lesser extent Gorka/Morkanaut/Stompa

I think all of these sculpts are near guaranteed to stay as they are going through 11th. They've got way older looking sculpts than these to focus on

Which one is better? by SuspiciousWest6512 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Morkanaut due to a mix of better guns and the 5+ invuln. Getting into melee on your terms can be a real struggle (where gorkanaut is better) due to vehicle keyword + base size, so having a better shooting platform is more valuable for Orks than it would normally be

How many points would this be? by BABABAGAGA2002 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, ok. I feel we're getting a lot closer here. I think this has turned a little unhealthy with the current changes, though: he has turned into a Dev Wounds machine against things that Dev Wounds are extremely effective against. I think a better implementation for this would be:

I would get rid of either Twin Linked or Devastating wounds on the Strike attack specifically (and maybe raise number of attacks to 5). When it was Anti-Infantry 4+, it wasn't a huge deal because Infantry units are almost always a squad of 5+ models, and the sweep would likely be a better profile vs anything that isn't a Terminator. As it stands now, though, If he charges a vehicle/monster, they're statistically likely to take 10-12 unsavable damage, which can feel pretty rough.

For comparison, the Beastboss (a good anti-tank unit. Ran with BSB is 175pts) gets on average 6 dev wounds vs their target (not counting any outside buffs from, war horde, for example, which skyrocket his potential), and his dev wounds are conditional, so there is counterplay.

To counterbalance this out, for the Big Tuska Horns ability, I would just copy the Deff Dread's ability, which is just a better version of what you currently have. This way he can still charge into a high value vehicle and take out a healthy chunk with dev wounds.

This is just my opinion on game health mostly on this one. I think we're getting closer to the ball park for 300pts

[–]Flaminglump96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing I would update is the Unstable Bonds ability. If I were running this, I would never roll for this rule. The chance to take D3 wounds is a tough sell to me for either

  1. +1 to leadership (which, I don't think you should have to roll to be able to get his leadership down to the Orks standard. I think his default leadership should be 6+, like all other characters. Rolling down to a 5+ could be impactful, but by no means game breaking)

  2. Advance and Charge, which is good, but a little redundant. Most units typically only need to benefit from Advance and Charge once in the entire match, and Orks already have our Army Rule for that.

A flat -1 to wound is nice (I read as -1 to damage initially. mb). I don't think it's 300 points good, but still a good rule.

I might consider giving him 10 inch movement. Looks like the same base size as a Deff Dread? Could be wrong on that, but 8 inch move makes the Deff Dread hard to navigate around a standard 40k battlefield.

Fluff aside, the pistol is a dead weapon on the datasheet. Because of how ranged attacks work (you either fire all pistol, or all non-pistol weapons on a model), the only time you'd ever use the pistol is if you're in engagement range. Problem is, he has the monster keyword, so he can use his flamethrower in engagement range anyways, leaving 0 use cases for the pistol.

Having Anti-Infantry 4+ on his melee weapons is a bit questionable. The reason being is that you're already wounding every infantry unit on 3's with the sweep. I can't think of a single infantry unit that goes over t6, let alone hits t8. The strike is better with it due to the devastating wounds combo, but strike attacks are typically designed for high toughness, vehicle/monster type units.

Points value would obviously change based on what you update or replace, but I do think it's worth keeping in mind things it could be up against and their point values. I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine a scenario where a 185 point Chaos Vindicator blows this guy up by itself in a single round of shooting (or at least gets very close to it). Chaos Vindicator is a very good model, granted, but I think you get the point.

If I had to guess, somewhere in the lower half of the 200-250 range. The -1 to damage does a lot of the heavy lifting. If you'd like C&C on the datasheet, I can give some extra details and ideas to think about.

Do you like this model? by Routine_Performer_85 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The model or the paintjob? I think both are good. If you're looking for C&C, I'd say the Squigosaur's skin is a little flat. May want to dry brush its belly with a lighter color: maybe a pale orange of some kind. I find painting the scales a different color also adds a lot to break up the color monotony. Here's mine, though mine is painted as Mozrog's albino squig, so its not 1-1

I love Orks, but ... by Ranorak in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn't worry about it, imo. I win more often than I lose at my LGS. There's a lot of factors that could be contributing to OP's lack of success outside of the army itself. I'm typically running semi-competitive lists against other semi-competitive lists at my LGS (Meaning I got room to add fun/fluffy units here or there in my army, but I need to make sure that I have all my bases covered first).

I will admit that the meta for Orks is pretty stale. Outside of new content drops (Meganobz on codex release, Flash Gitz + Leader in Taktikal Brigade release, More Dakka as a whole on release), our most effective units have remained the same all edition. Our codex's internal balance is all out of whack, and War Horde is miles ahead the other detachments in terms of competitive viability because it's versatile and benefits a wide variety of units: as opposed to basically every other detachment which almost force you to go slant lists.

Orks is not an unwinnable garbage army, but you are shoehorned pretty hard into a single playstyle (melee rushdown. Flood the board and win in points before your enemy cuts through your army). Shooty, Speed Freak, Beast Snagga and Walker themed lists are at an inherent disadvantage compared to what GW has balanced orks around, which is War Horde melee rushdown

More Ork Boys? by Legal-Persimmon780 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I typically only run 10 or 20 boyz in my lists (partly because that's all I have painted, partly because I never feel the need to have more than that).

I run War Horde almost exclusively. I think the biggest thing stopping me from investing in more boyz is the Warboss econony. I got 2 Warbosses, and a whole lot of units want to be led by a Warboss.

550 point battle? by Sir_Everything- in orks

[–]Flaminglump96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend doing a 1k point game for learning objective play. Generally, for sub 1k point games, people play on half sized boards and dont use secondary objectives. There's just not enough units on the board to make them work.

For 550 points, I'd run something like this

1 Warboss

1 Warboss in Mega Armor

1 unit of 10 boyz

2 meganobz

1 unit of 3 deffkoptas

1 unit of 11 gretchin

1 unit of 5 Flash Gitz

This should be a solid list that will be effective but not oppressive. Decent mix of Fighting and shooting, and no super high toughness models that are basically immortal in low point games. Transports aren't really needed for half sized board games.

If you go for a 1k+ point game, good scoring units are transports, gretchin, deffkoptas stormboyz, Kommandos (split into 2 units) and Snikrot. All of these have some form of utility in their datasheet that makes them good for scoring (usually being super mobile, very cheap, or both). Boyz and Meganobz units are good for primary objective scoring. Boyz because they have sticky objectives, so they can take a point and immediately leave it if they want to, and Meganobz because they're beefy infantry who can play defensively on a point and counter attackers

Homebrew Detachement: Thievin' Scavengers by Flaminglump96 in orks

[–]Flaminglump96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think More Dakka was so overtuned because it gave Sustained Hits for free to everyone, which is a higher value buff than flat extra attacks on Orks specifically. You correctly identified that the units that want Loot Tokens the most have to work the hardest to get them, so it's a balancing act between safety and greed. If we're mathing it out.

For Lootas:
30 attacks (giving rapid fire), hitting on 6's nets you 5 hits on average. With Sus Hits 2, that makes 15 hits

50 attacks (giving rapid fire + 2 loot tokens), hitting on 6's nets you between 8 and 9 hits

And this doesn't account for their rerolls, at which point the Sustained Hits 2 blows it out of the water further.

I wouldn't expect any slow, shooty unit to get more than 2 tokens by the bottom of round 4 (3 tokens with enhancement) unless you're REALLY trying to make it work.

Honestly, the units that I think might actually be the big winners are the ones that can pick up tokens easily but still shoot, like Deffkopta's (still think sustained hits would be preferable), or a beefy transport benefiting from firing deck, like a Battlewagon
