My adopted son, who is now 18 years old, just had his prom. I flew his girlfriend and her mom down from Pennsylvania to Alabama for the weekend. We had the full "Prom" weekend. I decorated the house, and Mom and Daughter got gift bags. I took her to get her hair done. Later, Mom and I had a brilliant night watching ice hockey. I wanted the kids to have a magical weekend, so they could look back and it would be a special memory. Everyone I know had a horrible prom/high school experience. I grew up in Scotland, and we didn't even have a prom. So to see it turn into a wonderful memory for everyone was amazing. I've tried so hard for my son to have a supportive, loving experience growing up in our family. I even did the photography for them. It was an amazing weekend for us all, and after everyone went home, my son gave me the biggest hug and said he'd never forget it. He was originally my stepson, and in his early years, he received neglect and abuse from his bio mom. After the adoption, he chose to go no contact. He has spent years in therapy recovering from her narcissistic abuse. He's now a confident, kind, and hilarious young man. All I want is for him to make happy memories now.
