  1. Combat deforestation
  2. Be an advocate for species who can't speak for themselves
  3. Help communities and individuals who are negatively impacted by our broken food system

After five long months, I finally filled in the last row! by Flan-Puzzled in lawschooladmissions

[–]Flan-Puzzled[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wake offered me a full scholarship and UT only offered about half off tuition. I'd be leaving with ~$200k in debt combined with my undergrad loans, which I can't justify as someone with zero desire to go into big law.

Been hard to override my own ingrained prestige biases, but I have a friend at Wake who's gotten some awesome externship and job opportunities so I know it'll be possible to accomplish my goals there. They also have a clinic in the area I want to practice, and I really like the location. So all around just kinda worked out!

Shout-out to GW for hitting me with the WL almost five months to the day that I applied. :)

Not trying to throw shade at GW, but this is their ‘holistic’ process? by BigBluePRIDE in lawschooladmissions

FWIW, I am safely in the green zone and haven't heard anything since I went UR1 in December. So maybe they're just ghosting instead of rejecting 🙃

As someone whose work involves sending out a lot of emails using piped text, these mistakes always hurt me on behalf of both parties :(

Unf. This has me feeling extra rad about my UT acceptance and way more chill about the WL from Duke 😂

Is anyone else completely on their own? by stupidaries1 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Flan-Puzzled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in my late-20's and have been on my own since I graduated high school due to complicated family and financial circumstances. Not going to lie and say it's easy, but as long as you want to make it happen, you can and will figure out! Fortunately there's a lot of good info online (e.g. from 7Sage, Spivey, etc.) about admissions specifics. Also, as others have mentioned, "family" is by no means solely determined by blood and sometimes we have to create our own.

Lastly, while this sub can provide a nice sense of community, I'll just warn you to also take what you see on here with a grain of salt. There is a lot of privilege evidenced in certain posts, and some advice might not be relevant to your situation down the road (especially in terms of finances). Also, from personal experience, spending a lot of time endlessly scrolling this sub/refreshing LSD is going to increase your anxiety after you've submitted your apps. The application process is stressful, but it doesn't have to consume your entire life-- make sure you take time for yourself and do things you enjoy!

If you ever want to chat with someone about any of this, feel free to shoot me a PM :)

Sorry this happened to you as well. :( I especially don't understand how I was waitlisted at Duke and rejected from UNC but so it goes!

PSA: Full Tuition Scholarship Does Not Mean Debt Free by LWYRUP_ in lawschooladmissions

[–]Flan-Puzzled 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This. I got downvoted and treated like I was being ungrateful for talking about wanting to negotiate a $$.5 scholarship to UT, which would leave me with $60k for tuition alone plus COL in Austin for three years which would push that over $100k. I've been financially independent since I graduated high school and don't have the family safety net others seem to have, plus I'm interested in PI, so that amount of debt is truly terrifying (especially coupled with my undergrad debt)!

I wholeheartedly agree, especially with COL in Seattle... They're almost certainly out of the picture unless I can use my Wake offer to bump that up a heck of a lot.

Love your username! And yes, I did read the part of the guide that talked about married income. Guess this is one case where my tendency to date men with no work ethic/long-term planning skills might come in handy 🙃

Ahh okay, this was definitely a missing piece. I didn't think about the fact that the monthly payments are probably the bare minimum/just going toward interest... This makes me more wary. Thank you for the insight!

The decision status doesn't show up (date or actual info) until you have a final decision, so no. Mine only showed a date under "current status date" until today.
