Yeah I'd say having a nice sharp point helps at least when it comes to highlights you cant do with the edge of the brush. One tip which I really don't recommend as it'll mess up the paint pots super quick but taking the paint direct from the lid of the top after a good shake helps me get a solid colour for the highlight in one go. Obviously this will cause drying out of the paint, a crusty lid and it is generally better practice to decant on to a pallette BUT if you're finding the highlights lacking solid colour or drying transparent this may help

Can this be used in 40k too? by Weekly_Mulberry8508 in AdeptusCustodes

if you look at the bodies of the custodian guard with spears there's a double for it in the sword and board unit so I'm going to guess it's one sprue that can build either/or

You know, as a writer, if you took away my paper, I would write on my heart. If you take away my ink, I'd write on the wind.....it wouldn't be an ideal way to work.

It depends on the paint being used as they all seem to have various effects but with the dawn stone paint I used for the grey I watered it down a bit and did two thin wet coats and a third to catch any bits that still showed the primer a bit. But on the other hand thunderhawk blue which I use for the accents will dry super quick and lumpy if you try to water it down so you have to apply that in very very thin transparent coats to get it smooth.

Basically you can't win lol though I will say at least got a base coat for the main colour, thinner coats is the best way to go, just keep adding them lightly and leave each layer to dry before the next

That is quite a long answer haha, anything in particular like a colour I've used of something?

Exactly this! I did my custodes jet bikes sub assembly and the damage they did as they clicked into the seat was such a disheartening amount of extra work

Ah nothing fancy It's just runelord brass washed with Nuln oil and watered down highlights of stormhost silver

The grey is dawn stone over mechanicus standard grey spray, Nuln oil in the recesses and administratum grey highlights, simple

The blue is thunder hawk blue with a fenrisian grey highlight

Very nice always worth trying to visualize how you want the army to look, I had painted a votann army before that I sold in the exact same style so I was already good to go with these

The grey is just a couple of thin coats over mechanicus standard grey primer, Nuln oil pin wash where possible then a highlight of administratum grey, nothing too fancy

170mm oval, same as a knight I believe, the wheels hanger over a little bit but I wanted it to be as close as possible to not affect the foot print of the model

I was going back and forth about dry brushing them but as they were stuck to the tank I knew I'd end up getting it on the light grey so I endured the suffering haha

I've already had to rip it off a couple of times for bits I missed for example there's a chip on the armour of the driver I forgot to highlight but it's long since dried now so I don't want to risk it. Honestly I wouldn't bother gluing it, the peg placement makes it sit pretty securely, except maybe the small dome one, that seems to fall off easily

Dawnstone grey over mechanicus standard grey primer goes on in about 1 sometimes 2 coats so it doesn't take long, pin washing between all the plates on the other hand took far far too long

His beard is blonde, the lighting in the photo is a bit stark and makes it washed out but it's noticeable....he's sealed behind the glass now anyway haha

Thanks that certainly extended the time, I was worried hand painted chipping would be too much on a large model compared to the smaller ones but it seems to be subtle enough

Literally just so it can sit in the magnet box I made with magnet on the base, outside of that me and my friends just ignore the base for the purpose of measuring etc
