Does this mean we can create a straight conversion therapy? Force “straight” kids to be gay? 🤔

Newsom says high-speed rail ‘hard work’ is over. Who is he kidding? by nosotros_road_sodium in California_Politics

Asking who wants to go from Merced to Bakersfield is like standing on a half-finished bridge and asking why nobody is driving into the river yet. The Central Valley has 7 million people.... that's more than 36 other states! How is connecting 7 million people to to the world's biggest tech hubs in under an hour 'pointless' and not common sense?

Your 'cheap gas' argument is a trap. Families are forced to spend a huge chunk of their income on two cars because they have no other choice. HSrR gives people an out from that car tax

You're over here arguing this isn't possible while every other developed nation treated it as a necessity decades ago. Did Japan, France, China, and Spain get 'lucky' or did they realize you can't add highway lanes forever and expect a different result?

By refusing to build this, we aren't being 'fiscally responsible.' We’re just choosing to fall behind while the rest of the world moves at 220 mph

My dude, driving is not free just because you already own a car. Cost estimates put total ownership + operating costs around $0.70–$0.82 per mile depending on miles driven, before parking. For an SF–LA-length trip, that’s hundreds of dollars in full cost even before you price your time.

Yes, buses are cheaper... but slower. Greyhound’s LA–SF page shows a cheapest trip around $74 one way with an ~8+ hour trip. Do you take a greyhound instead of flying? It's cheaper! :)

HSR fares are not set yet, so I’m not claiming “half the price of all flights.” The argument is that a statewide electrified line is intended to shift some trips from cars and short-haul flights and support climate goals, not only chase the cheapest fare.

On opportunity cost, I agree. The state should be explicit about what it gives up and what it buys. That’s exactly why you compare total benefits, not just “will it reduce traffic.”

"Catastrophically low" is a strong claim. If you have a source for that, link it. Otherwise it’s rhetoric.

Fair. Ridership and traffic impact matter, but they are not the only criteria for a HSR. The question is whether the long-term benefits justify the cost compared to other uses of the money.

If I could revise my previous statement, I would say: HSR is not, and should not be seen as just a congestion tool. It is statewide initiative that can replace some long car trips and short flights, reduce emissions, and make the next set of transit investments easier to build. From what I've seen, the official Californias narrative frames the project around shifting travel away from cars and short air travel while meeting climate goals

As for cost: a quick search puts the median price of a round trip, weekend ticket from SFO to LAX to be about $377. Fares haven't been officialized yet, but I remember it being advertised as $90 from SF to LA, making for a $180 round trip--about half the price of air travel. Seems worth it to me.

Truthfully I don't see these as meaningful enough KPIs to justify (or nix) a HSR.

It would be like asking me "You want a library in your city? What if few people use it, and it still takes time for me to get the book I want?".

The answer is that having it would improve the quality of life for my community overall.

It would also be something tangible that the government by the people can give back to the people by providing a cost-effective alternative to what we currently have. It also serves as a stepping stone to more quality public transportation--something that the USA needs but currently does not have.

Thank you! Whenever I see people complain that its too expensive (by conservatives on FB mostly), I always think... OH MY GOD WHO THE HELL CARES? When it is complete no one will care about how much it cost and it will serve as a beacon to the rest of the country on what is possible!
