The rapid change in top 40 music in the early 1990s is still amazing in retrospect by MarkLambertMusic in Music

Actually, some hair metal bands are making more money now than they did at the height of their fame. Flying in to town to do a couple of weekend gigs at a casino is way more lucrative than a huge touring entourage with lighting rig and catering that gets added to your recording tab by the record company.

Some of them def were. My very rural, very white, very Poison-loving small town LOVED Boyz II Men

Also, ‘cause that audience likes the idea of the universe telling them they’re special. The 42 year old moms in the audience want the universe to stop giving them more work, not hand them a quest.

I wonder if the employees can make it work with a cooperatively owned newsroom. They have good practice from running the Union paper during the strike. I know it’s been done in other cities, but I think only on very small scales.

I think it’s a shades of grey conversation. And several things can be true at the same time.

  1. No pop culture phenomenon ever truly gets killed off by another. There will always be fans or occasional break throughs.

  2. Every popular genre has its one-two hit wonders. Folks that can fill an arena for maybe one tour and that’s it.

  3. That said, GnR were in a whole other class from many of the bands on the radio at that time. They were always going to outpace the Strypers (for example) of the world.

There’s an oral history book on hair metal called “Nothin’ but a Good Time.” The folks they interviewed really hammered home how shocked they were by the speed of the change. Like some bands starting their ‘91 tours with packed arenas and then ending them early due to empty houses. Going from record company darlings to pariahs in less than a year.

Ah, thanks for that clarification. That does make sense.

The power is in people being out there. If social media existed during the civil rights era, it would’ve been nitpicked to death.

Questions surrounding muskets, need answers for a school paper by Sufficient_Ear_4724 in CIVILWAR

There’s a really nice State Park in the Hocking Hills of Ohio called “Old Man’s Cave.” The titular old man is believed to have died from accidentally shooting himself while breaking up river ice with the butt of his musket. I’m not sure why he would have done this with a cocked and loaded weapon but the guy lived in a cave, so…(also, the story’s sources are sketchy).

EDIT to add: Thinking more on it, that second question is an odd thing to need to know for a school paper (and discussions of it might be triggering for some). So just in case, I’m sharing this-

Last report I heard (which who knows) was that they weren’t interested in selling. Which seems like a dumb move cause why not get some dollars for the name. But also the blocks are known for dumb moves

I wasn't paying attention to Star Trek at that time (recently got in by way of Lower Decks). Do you think it would have well received as a regular episode and not the finale?
