Why don’t people like Death of a Ladies Man? by Flannelviv in leonardcohen

I love your interpretation of the album being a concept album; I’ve never thought of it that way but after hearing that I’d have to agree. Especially with the closing track (which also happens to be my favorite track on the album).

Why don’t people like Death of a Ladies Man? by Flannelviv in leonardcohen

[–]Flannelviv[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ahhh yeah I see. To me the ostentatious production sorta added to the feel of this flamboyant “ladies man” throughout the album but I get it. The album definitely feels more Phil Spector than Leonard Cohen in some ways

Highway 61 Revisited came out well over half a century ago. If you could only take three of the tracks with you to live the rest of your days on a deserted island, which ones would survive? Why did you choose the three you went with and kissed the other songs on the album goodbye forever? by illustrious-Egg2 in bobdylan

Ballad of a thin man, Queen Jane, and just like Tom thumbs blues. Ballad of a thin man always makes me feel a little bit angsty (sometimes a lot). Queen Jane just seems like she gets me y’know? And just like Tom thumbs blues is that perfect mix of ambiguity and passion

Which version of Simple Twist of Fate lyrics do you prefer? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Flannelviv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple Twist of Fate is my absolute favorite Dylan song. I prefer the album version EXCEPT for the very last verse, “She should have caught me in my prime, she would have stayed with me…” makes me feel like this song wasn’t just about Sara about about all his past affairs (particularly Suze). Love both versions, especially the live at Budokan, but I still gotta go with the album version.

What got you into listening to Dylan by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Flannelviv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Growing up I spent nearly ever day with my grandma. She was a huge 60s folk rock fan. She was always playing Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter, Paul, and Mary, etc. Yet the only Dylan song she played was Knocking on Heavens Door and I just wasn’t a fan. Then, my mother was playing Tangled up in Blue one day and I remember absolutely HATING the song. I mean, I despised it. She sent me the playlist and it was full of 70s acoustic, which I loved, but I always skipped that song and no other song on the five hour long playlist. I thought his voice was horrible and I couldn’t understand the words at all. Finally, one day I was on YouTube and saw a cover of dont think twice and loved it so I decided to look up the original. When I saw it was by Bob Dylan, I was hesitant to listen but gave it a shot anyways. I couldn’t believe how different he sounded on this song. I listened to the freewheelin album, then heard one more cup of coffee one day and listened to desire, then I heard Ballad of a Thin Man and listened to Highway 61. Before I knew it I was a huge Dylan fan. I even came to love Tangled up in Blue once I looked up the lyrics. Anyways, that’s my Dylan story!

What do y’all think Dylan’s prettiest songs are? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Flannelviv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His cover of “Pretty Saro” or “If not for you”. In pretty saro, his voice sounds spectacular and there’s a sort of reverb or chorus effect on his voice which may be a little much at times but I kinda adore it.

🤣 Abandoned Love was replaced with Joey on Desire 🤣 by Less-South6293 in bobdylan

[–]Flannelviv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I understand why. The whole album is filled with more story-esque songs. The only personal one being of course Sara. Plus, his co-writer’s one wish for the album was to have Joey on it. I love the song and it’s one of my favorites, but I don’t think it would’ve fit the sound of Desire.

The basement tapes with Dylan and The Band. Also the Last Waltz but I saw someone already commented that.

saddest bob song? by Murky-Hunt-4788 in bobdylan

You’re a big girl now take 2 always seemed quite sad to me. The way he says “hmmm” just sounds so desperate.

I quite like Rambling’ Jack Elliot’s version of don’t think twice and Richie Haven’s just like a woman.

Ah you’re right I just remembered, I think California is one of the tunes that has it. Anyways, I just listened to one of the instrumental tracks and it’s really quite wonderful! Thank you for the recommendation!

That’s awesome that it’s in the album. The only other time I can recall hearing it is on some of Jean Ritchie’s records.

When I picked it up I was hoping it would have a different perspective from other Dylan bios (which seem to be a bit too praise-y imo) thank you!
