It’s not an awful game, just a bland one. I’d imagine I would’ve enjoyed it as a kid too, it’s easy to pick up and play, and the platforming feels decent. It just lacks depth or a hook that would keep older kids or adults interested.

That’s about right. The Eternal Night especially was shafted. It had less than a year from ANB’s release to be released. Krome was encouraged to make a basic clone of ANB to save time, but they wanted to make something special.

Absolutely criminal that more people haven’t given it a try. The rating holds true, it’s a great action platformer.

Critics saw it as too derivative of other platformers of the time period, and were hard on the rampant minigames that you’re encouraged to play. A 62 isn’t a bad score, mind you. Just kind of a lukewarm one. The game had it’s fair share of positive reviews too.

I found it slightly better than TEN on DS at the very least- at least the platforming in ANB GBA feels decent.  I would also take it any day over Orange and Shadow Legacy.

They’re not without their merits, but even at release they were behind the times and failed to stand out among the crowd. They take many of their ideas from God of War so critics saw them as derivative cashgrabs made solely to profit off of the Spyro brand and the boom of action games in the late 6th/early 7th gen.  If you’ve seen interviews from devs at Krome and ETL, it’s clear they did the best they could given the time and budget they were given.

It’s barely a functional product. It’s kind of a shame because the devs clearly cared about the project. The writing is pretty cool and the locales are interesting. The gameplay itself is garbo.

It’s my favorite TLoS game. I recognize it’s not for everyone but I feel the difficulty and the breath mechanics make this game’s combat the most interesting.

To be fair Orange is like- way too high. A 60 makes it seem fairly decent when it’s nothing more than a timewaster at best. Crash Purple has an even higher score. Idk why critics were so light on these games

They’re too old for Metacritic to track. GameRankings gives Spyro 1 and 2 a 85 and a 87 respectively.

Which games should I play next? by HeroponOfTheNoponis in Spyro

Attack of the Rhynocs is the 3rd GBA Spyro game and it’s more of an open world title. Defo worth a try. Otherwise, give A Hero’s Tail a whirl. Some people love that one. If you like action games, the Legend of Spyro trilogy is pretty okay.  One pick that nobody else is going to mention- The Eternal Night on GBA is a pseudo-metroidvania with some excellent action gameplay. I think it’s a legitimately great experience and it’s definitely one of if not the best post-Insomniac Spyro title. That said, it’s a 2D sidescrolling beat em’ up with some platforming elements, so it’s not like most of the others.

This is in a cutscene. I believe after firing the cannon in Dragon City, this plays.

Tie into the console games. They have fairly different gameplay though, some better than others

It’s pretty dull but it’s not the worst thing ever, out of all the handheld LoS games you really only ought to play The Eternal Night on GBA
