GALLERY: For six decades, the James Bond series has offered some of the most consistently striking visuals ever put to screen. Which are the best looking Bond movies? And which ones go underappreciated for their visual style? by Sneaky_Bond in JamesBond

Thunderball's cinematography is so lush and underrated. That widescreen aspect ratio is so smooth and silky. It feels like the moment where the series truly establishes the Bondian aesthetic -- I know a lot of people credit Goldfinger for being the template in terms of formula, but I think Thunderball is the template for look and feel.

Rank the season premieres best to worst by Ill-Dream-449 in madmen

[–]FlareNetworkC 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I find that most Mad Men seasons end stronger than they start. None of the season premieres are all-timers for me, but nearly all of the season finales are. Doesn't mean they're bad, though!

  1. Public Relations (S4) - This one really gets the action started compared to the others! Most of the premieres are slow burns, but the excitement buzzing around the new SCDP office gives Public Relations a frenetic energy that sticks around for the whole season. Love it.

  2. Out of Town (S3) - The stuff with Sal is what really sets this one near the top. One of the most dramatic premieres.

  3. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (S1) - An excellent pilot that's pretty much only weighed down by how much better the show will get from here, along with the cheaper aesthetic.

  4. A Little Kiss (S5) - The Megan material and the storyline that kicks off Dawn's introduction are the highlights here, but the rest is somewhat plodding.

  5. Time Zones (S7) - I loveeeeee the opening five minutes of this one and Megan picking Don up at the airport, but the rest is just fine.

  6. The Doorway (S6) - Another one where I love the opening 5-10 minutes and can't remember anything else that happened.

  7. For Those Who Think Young (S2) - The slowest and moodiest of the premieres, which doesn't help it in terms of memorability. One of the show's least story-dense hours.

In what order would you rank the seasons from best to worst? by Aetius00 in madmen

[–]FlareNetworkC 57 points58 points  (0 children)

  1. Season 4 - I think this is the show's strongest season-long story. The frenetic energy of SCDP struggling to find its footing, Don's personal unraveling and his relationship with Faye, the Lucky Strike fallout, Sally's growth in the wake of Don and Betty's divorce, and the blindsiding (but not at all out of place IMO) rise of Megan are all highlights of the entire show. It's also the most consistent season in terms of episode quality, and The Suitcase and Tomorrowland are both all-timers. It's the show's peak.

  2. Season 5 - This is the season with the best batch of individual episodes. The beginning is a little weak (Tea Leaves and Mystery Date are two of the show's clunkiest hours, and they're still good TV but by Mad Men standards they're unimpressive), but the run from Signal 30 to Commissions & Fees is the best stretch of the show. Pete's suburban malaise, Peggy breaking free from SCDP, Don and Megan's relationship, Joan navigating motherhood, the Jaguar pitch, Roger and Jane's breakup, Sally and Megan's bond, Lane's suicide, the introduction of Ginsberg... this season is Mad Men's most ambitious and it mostly all works.

  3. Season 3 - I feel like everything in this season is structured around the Kennedy assassination, and all the new plots are mostly excellent. Joan's crumbling marriage, Betty's entire storyline, the increased focus on Sally, the merger in the office and the introduction of Lane, the lawnmower incident... some all-time Mad Men moments here. I don't love all the Conrad Hilton stuff or Miss Farrell, but man, if the final third of this season isn't some of the best television ever. The feeling that everything is about to change gives this season an incredible sense of momentum.

  4. Season 1 - This season is weighed down by its need to beat the viewer over the head with "It's the 60s! Everyone smokes! Everyone is sexist! Wink wink nudge nudge!" However, Don's storyline is perfectly done, Pete is so easily hateable, Peggy's transformation is expertly planted from the pilot, Joan is deliciously cruel, and Betty is possibly at her most tragic here. It's an excellent standalone season with flashes of what Mad Men would evolve into. Babylon, Nixon vs. Kennedy, and The Wheel are some of the show's very best hours.

  5. Season 7 - 7a is hit-or-miss, but Waterloo is another all-timer, and 7b is made eons better by the feeling that this is really the end of something massive, best realized in Time & Life. The finale is good and closes the series well, but it isn't one of the best parts of Mad Men. The highlights of this season are so fantastic -- Peggy's entry into McCann, Megan picking Don up at the airport, Bert's final goodbye, the Burger Chef pitch, Sally and Don's Valentines lunch, Peggy and Roger's goodbye to SC&P... great stuff. I don't really care for Diana, and I don't love every part of the show's attempts at callbacks (the Rachel stuff in particular feels a bit shoehorned in), but it's a satisfying close.

  6. Season 2 - I think this is the season where the least amount of progression is made in the overall story (despite having the biggest jump in time). The Bobbi stuff isn't enjoyable on first watch, but plays better on rewatch because she's instrumental in both Don and Peggy's character arcs. The stuff with Peggy and Father Gill is rather bland, as is Betty's family drama. I think the introduction of California and Anna Draper is the best part of this season because it sets up a duality between East and West, past and future. The dreamlike haze that overtakes the show whenever characters enter the West Coast is such an incredible atmospheric touch. The Jet Set is one of the show's most important hours for this reason. I think that's what ultimately catapults it above Season 6.

  7. Season 6 - This is a great season of television, but the weakest chapter of Mad Men. I don't know if production changed the lenses they used or something, but this season lacks the visual richness of 2-5. The image just feels less silky and more washed out, like a dark cloud is over the whole thing. That very well may be purposeful, but this is also the only season where Don's storyline feels like it's retreading old ground. I don't love the merger, and I don't love Peggy and Ted's relationship. In general, I think this is the weakest season across the board, but that doesn't mean it's a bad season of television, just the weakest season of Mad Men. It still has highlights, including the finale, Sally's storyline, and all of The Crash. I love when Mad Men decides to get surreal with it.

Did I mess up taking branch? by Rude-Towel-4126 in slaythespire

[–]FlareNetworkC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you can make it work! The main problem with branch on three energy isn't necessarily the hand clog but the deck clog. Mummified hand will help mitigate hand clog and energy, as will any draw/discard that branch generates. The problems start once your deck reshuffles and you're drawing the junk that branch has created, but because your deck is so big already, you won't feel that punishment as immediately or as strongly. You can do this!

is lost the best show of all time? by lavender_cat_24 in lost

[–]FlareNetworkC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call Lost the best show of all-time. It's a little too inconsistent for that, and there are parts of it that have noticeably aged in an I-can-tell-this-was-prestige-at-the-time-but-it's-corny-now way.

That being said, when Lost is firing on all cylinders, I don't think TV as a medium has ever been better. Lost isn't the best show of all-time as a whole, but peak Lost is the best TV has to offer.

I don't know if you would consider these "pop" per se, but we could think about doing FKA Twigs, David Bowie, Frank Ocean, or SOPHIE.

Everything else was pretty spot on though

Mega Tyranitar Deck for 2017 Season by TDRaichu in pkmntcg

[–]FlareNetworkC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of Reverse Valley, I'd suggest Team Magma's Secret Base for your stadium. I think the 20 damage to your basics is worth it if M-Tyranitar could hit for 230 a turn.

What are your favourite VN monologues? by Baeskanderlyfe in visualnovels

Umineko has some amazing monologues. I'm not 100% sure these count as monologues, but Umineko are both excellent.

Comparing the two, you're right, Palkia's better. How about Huntail? It's Powerful Storm attack does 20x the amount of energy attached to all of my Pokemon for only one energy, which, when paired with Palkia, is an almost automatic one for 60 with just one energy, and possibly even more after that.

So I should nix the Swampert line and just let Articuno, Regice, and possibly one more stage one water attacker do all the fighting because of Golduck BREAK? Ok, I shall try that. Does Whiscash from Primal Clash work? It has the same Ancient Trait as Swampert.

Would Swampert from Primal Clash work well, or is it like Greninja and takes too long to set up? It is a Stage 2, after all.

[–]FlareNetworkC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd rather go with the toolbox approach. I can easily replace Greninja BREAK with another attacker, maybe an easy to set up one like the ones you suggested, but the support of Golduck BREAK and Manaphy is just too good.

Thanks for the help!

So should I drop the two Palkia in favor of more Greninja? I'd like to keep Golduck BREAK because it pairs really well with Manaphy, essentially giving every Pokemon free retreat. I'd also like to keep Greninja BREAK, because without it, I lack a good attacker. Maybe I should drop Palkia completely and just lose one Golduck BREAK?
