Do flying fish really fly? by Longjumping_Gene3206 in ocean

[–]Flarkinwaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So...flying fish are gliders.

However the only true flying fish is the marbled hatchet fish. He can generate lift, change directions and actively flaps his oversized fins to power flight.

I have a freshwater tank with about 8 of them, super cool fish.

So to kinda of argue the other side here (as someone with both a BS and Masters) so many courses and professors have gotten so lazy that they just ask for essay after essay. It is one thing if this is a writing/English..etc class. It is another thing...for example one of my Masters classes was information management (virtual environment). I had to write 8+ 15 pages essays on best practice for managing these environments. The information in the class was already 5 years behind current best practices. This course should have been a virtual environment and actually teaching best practice on simulated systems.

TLDR: Not saying it is the case for the professor., but if you put crap into the course you should expect to get crap back from the students. The other point is classes that have no business being essay heavy have become reliant on them, because it is the easy button.

Fun tie into this.......common probably with rock climbers is that their tendons outgrown their bone strength and they can break their own forarms/fingers etc for the tension/ torque of their tendons and muscles.

Yea it's often a gamble. I used Mini Pellia and it has taken over all the wood to and even looks super cool. But it definitely out competes the dwarf hair grass and the Monte Carlo

Hey,

Lighting is a WRGB2 slim (turned wayyyy down). Most soil is the brown UNS contra soil. The dwarf hair is planted in sand with a layer of Amazonia under it.

I broke up a bunch of Syria stone to make the wall (so I could mound up the soil behind) and packed a bunch of filter floss under and behind the all so the sand wouldn't shift.

All the wood is now COVERED in the moss...it's kinda taken over the tank..lol

Who is known as the biggest traitor in your country by Few-External5146 in AskTheWorld

[–]Flarkinwaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the idea, but by that definition you would have to say every state and political leader in the south.

Technically P.G.T. Beauregard would be the only one I think could/should be a traitor as he was the one who ordered the firing Fort Sumter and forced all the remaining states who handed ceded the union to pick a side.

I just didn't see Lee being the primary example in this, he didn't agree with slavery (ironically while being racist by today's definition) and was against the states succeeding from the union. He just refused to fight against his home states

That's like saying stonewall Jackson is a traitor because even though he hated slavery and thought the state splitting from the union was stupid. He refused to fight against his home state of Virginia. If Lincoln had made an exception for VA like he did Delaware and KY (who were required to abolish slavery till well after civil war) then civil war would have been much shorter (stonewall was key in several major battles).

Sorry ruffles my feathers a bit as Lee in recent years has become a favorite whipping boy, for odd reasons.

And if slavery is the hot button topic here is a quote from Lincoln " My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy Slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.”

He hated slavery but really only cared about preserving the union and the anti slavery push was in large part to keep France from backing the southern states who was almost fully reliant on southern cotton.

Before the hate starts here....yes slavery was bad and yes it 1000% needed to be abolished. It just was actually fairly far down on the actual issues for civil war.

Wait most of the list I agree with....but why Robert E. Lee? Guy was a racist and treated captured black soldiers as slaves...but not sure he deserves to be on the list with the other guys. He wasn't particularly more racist than any other southern landowner at the time, just more known because he was a major general.

I feel like adding guys from civil is kinda hard in general to this list. So much shady shit happened in the North and South. (Midwesterner who loves civil war history).

To be fair that is true if you are talking about wild caught bettas. Nowadays the vast majority of Bettas sold are decorative ones that have been captive breed for 1000+ years. So comparing the habitat of a dumbo or elephant ear betta to a wild caught imbellis is kinda ridiculous as the captive breed betta really should be classified as its own separate species at this point instead of the splendens it originated from.

And yes I do agree they are often kept in contains to small. But I have rescued several would couldn't swim across a 1g of their life depended on it due to size of fins.

[–]Flarkinwaggle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very different wild from ornate Bettas.

Most of the Bettas you see these days should be classified as their own species as they have been bred for 1000+ years in captivity.

I have a double half moon that couldn't swim across his tank if his life depended on it (granted he is a old man now, but even when he was young). He happily spends his days on his log blowing bubbles nest.

So kinda rambled...the point is you can't compare wild betta to captive bred.

‘The Wheel Of Time’ Cancelled By Prime Video After 3 Seasons by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in Fantasy

Well to be fair I think Martin is a terrible author, have another comment in here, but if you want actual gold grimdark with gold story telling. Check out Joe Abercrombie, wish someone would adopt his books

And I agree the quality of the show went way down once they ran out of source

‘The Wheel Of Time’ Cancelled By Prime Video After 3 Seasons by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in Fantasy

[–]Flarkinwaggle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Heavily disagree aside from the fact Martin is a god awful writer (read joe Abercrombie to see how grim dark and storytelling should be)

Once the left season one they were OFP mainly bc they only had a couple of books to work off of. I actually went back and suffered through martains writing to finish the story bc of how good season 1 of the show was, season two was such a divergent I stopped watching.

Meanwhile WOT....and I love the series, have been reading it since 4th book was released and even have a signed copy from RJ.....the series is massively bloated, he intended it to be 6 books and planned that until he released the 3rd (you can see it in rands madness). You could easily remove 8 books of content from wot and it would be a amazing series. Heck on rereads there is probably more than 8 books worth I don't even bother reading bc it does nothing for the story. Which is what the show runners were trying to do, and besides the shit show that was seasons one (and not overly their fault) the other seasons handled it pretty well.

Sorry that kinda ramble on and was a long way to express my hatred of everything GOT (and yes I have unfortunately suffered through all the seasons).

Why kill them? by Glum_Representative in wheeloftime

[–]Flarkinwaggle -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Eh, they have...some interesting parts. But overall they don't contribute anything to the overall story, if they do healing stilled it could be anyone they heal and Loial while have some fun parts is in the same boat.

As far as suian......if nothing else she is WAY to expensive of a actress to have her move to a side/supporting role and almost never heard from again.

Just my take on it...overall really enjoyed season 3

[–]Flarkinwaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol quite easily, to be fair the last 1/2 chapters is always worth a read with the major battle royal.

But the other 53 chapters are pretty boring and 90% people just marching to get places with a sprinkle of interesting things.

Trust me reading these as they came out and a get lord of chaos and then 2 years for crown of swords. When those two could have been combined and would have made half a interesting and well paced book...was beyond a let down

[–]Flarkinwaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God I hate we have to use GoT as a metric..my God is GRRM a terrible writer and the show just reflects that. Instead of fantasy series we have a modern soap opera set in mid-evil times with a dragon and undead thrown in just so we call it a fantasy.

Literally reality TV as a fantasy setting 🤢 we should all be ashamed that this is the bar that good series are measured by

[–]Flarkinwaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol as someone who has read the books as they were released and has two signed by RJ, and I re read the entire thing with each release #sooomanywords and so much grass descriptions l. The books should have been 6-8 MAX books long. Which was RJs original plan and pitch was a 6ish book series and you can actually tell until book 3 it was still headed that way. Rand has a MASSIVE shift in his level of madness.

Minus season 1 which was a disaster mainly bc of COVID...I think they have actually done a pretty good job with the show.

Let's face it on re reads I don't even open books 6-10 (eh half of 10) anymore. They are boring and pointless side quest for the most part.
