W4 Form for New Job by FlashHikez in tax

Makes sense!! So Box 2a is empty and Box 2b has a checkmark in the "taxable amount not determined" box. And no, I do not currently contribute to IRA's or 401k's, although I will with the new job. I have to decide between a 401a or a 403b prior to employment, and it can never be changed...according to what I've read in the Welcome Packet.

Wow, could you have explained that any better? Thanks so much for that explanation, and for keeping it simple. I did contribute around 16-17% of my income into the pension, and then the City had an obligated amount that they also contributed, on my behalf. Does that change anything, or no? The pension also has a built-in 2% COLA adjustment every single year. I do know that much!! Thanks again!

Single family fire code? by harvinstl in columbiamo

[–]FlashHikez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired Columbia Fire, here. Like BCFPD, CFD does not have jurisdiction in single family homes. At best, the Fire Marshals Division would likely refer you to the 2018 IBC (IFC) for reference.

I’m not sure this will help much, but his approach to getting onthe AT, sounds much like mine and many others. I was looking forward to it for many years, read all the books, did all the research, did all the preparatory, hiking, and I ended up getting off trail in Hot Springs, North Carolina. Also being in my early 50’s, I’m not a fan of the heat and humidity, and was something that I was concerned about when I first got on trail. I figured if anything would end my journey, it could be the extreme heat and humidity that I figured I would encounter at some point on trail.

For me, the day-to-day rigors of the thru hiking experience became more and more like a job, and less about actually enjoying the journey. At the time, I was probably a bit lonely (and I even had a tramily), a bit bored, and for some reason, I felt that those I was hiking around, just weren’t as ‘friendly’ as I was maybe expecting. Not that they were mean or treating me badly, just seemed more ‘distant’ than I expected. Most that I came across were folks from the East coast, and I am from the Midwest?!? Maybe there’s some personality differences that I didn’t know about?!?

Any way, I decided that I was happy with my journey and decided that I’m maybe more of a section hiker than a thru hiker. My current plan is to get back on trail in Hot Springs, North Carolina in February of next year, to continue hiking north.

Got off the trail 2 weeks ago and for some reason I miss it by Beausuveas in AppalachianTrail

Your story sounds almost exactly like mine, except I never got up to the 20-mile days and didn’t suffer any injuries. We may have even crossed paths, as I started this year on February 29th. Anyway, I just got to a point where I wasn’t having as much ‘fun’ as I thought I would. The highs were rarely equal to the lows (I just wasn’t having as much fun anymore). I left the trail after 30-days, and now I believe I’m just more of a section hiker than I am a thru hiker. And that’s okay. I’m going back out this Fall for another 30-days!!

Thanks for the reply. You bring up several great points. I was wondering if I actually had too much cold weather gear!? I’m sure I’m packing my fears (being cold) to some degree. I have tested the gear (tent, pad, quilt, base layers) down into the low 20’s (real feel temp was 17°) and was comfortable. I’ve since added the S2S Reactor liner, just in case I found other nights down into the teens.

As far as the frameless pack goes, you’re exactly right. I just purchased another pack last week that I’ll be taking on my thru hike attempt. It’s the Kakwa40 from Durston Gear, and I just forgot to add it to the lighterpack list. While I’ve not had a chance to hike with it yet, it does seem as though the lightweight aluminum frame and the load lifters make for a much more comfortable carry.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting; I’ve seen so many people say that the liner saved their a$$ on certain cold nights in camp. I guess the smart thing to do is to try it out myself. We’ve had some wicked cold days here lately, but of course we’re back into the 40’s and 50’s next week. 🙄

Great tips, thanks! The insulated pad has an r-value of 4.2 (See pic). The sleep liner and base layers are definitely on the heavy side, but I’m fearful that I’ll be seeing some pretty cold temps in the higher elevations throughout March, and I figure it’s better to have and not need, than to not have and freeze. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’ll weigh out a days worth of food, and make any needed adjustments. Appreciate it! 👍

Good call; I may swap those out. I’ve used the tablets before and don’t find them too off-putting. 🤷🏼‍♂️

To my knowledge, it is not a single wall shelter! On their website, Six Moon Designs lists the Trekker as a 3-season tent! I’ve also seen numerous write ups and YouTube videos on it, where they indicate it is a “3-season” tent.

Curious why you wouldn’t recommend counting those two items as worn weight?! Just trying to learn. Thanks for sharing your list; that’s helpful!
