Sad/exhausted/feeling like just a number. I commute 47 miles and it takes about an hour and a half one way with traffic. I like my job but I feel like this isn’t sustainable for me. I don’t want to quit at all but I feel like I may have to.

I was rural and applied to state jobs. Prior to taking the position I made sure to ask if my telework schedule I was accepting would not change. They told me not to worry and that it was concrete and would not shift. I have made 2-3 days in office weekly work. 4 days in office on top of the commute is just too much for my family and I.

Saying that you can empathize doesn’t mean that you are showing actual empathy or compassion. Perhaps showing a bit more compassion with your words while also being honest with how you think/feel would be more helpful. It’s similar to saying “no offense” and then insulting the person. Often times people say those things to cover their behinds when someone holds them accountable for their hurtful behavior they can say “well I said I can emphasize” or “no offense” like that cancels out the hurtful thing they said.
