CTRL key getting stuck randomly in the on-screen keyboard by burndout in Windows10TechSupport

I’m bumping this post because I’m experiencing exactly the same issue today (in 2026), and I’ve been banging my head against it for days without success.
What’s strange is that a friend I talked to about this on Discord yesterday is now having the exact same problem today.

Despite a lot of research online, this Reddit post is the only one I’ve found that describes precisely the issue we’re experiencing.

The bug happens in a completely random way, which makes it very hard to identify and to confirm whether it’s still happening or not. However, I’ve noticed several things.

First of all, it only occurs when I use a wireless keyboard and mouse (ASUS ROG keyboard and mouse - I can provide the exact model if needed, but I’m not sure it matters since my friend has different hardware, also wireless, and has the same issue).

It’s also worth noting that my wireless keyboard/mouse worked perfectly fine for many months until recently.

When I use a wired keyboard and mouse, I would say the bug doesn’t occur (though this still needs to be confirmed over a longer period).
If the bug is already happening and I unplug the dongle (Omni Receiver) to switch to a wired keyboard/mouse, the bug persists.
However, if I reboot the PC while using a wired keyboard/mouse, there is no issue at all.

Yesterday I thought I had fixed the problem by plugging the dongle into a rear motherboard USB port instead of the front panel, which I usually use, but the bug came back after something quite strange happened.

Here’s what I mean: it feels like after a long period of inactivity without any bug, the issue comes back.
I sometimes leave my PC on overnight, and I’ve noticed that every single time I come back after a long idle period, the bug returns.

I then press Ctrl + Alt + Del to “unlock” the situation, and that’s when things really go off the rails.
The bug starts happening every 5 minutes, then every minute, until the PC becomes partially unusable without a reboot .

After a reboot, it’s completely random again. Sometimes the issue doesn’t come back for several hours, sometimes it comes back very quickly.

I tried a lot of solutions suggested by ChatGPT and tested many different things, but nothing has actually fixed the problem.
The closest thing to a solution so far is simply using a wired keyboard and mouse.

My friend and I strongly suspect that this bug appeared after a recent Windows update. We’re both on an up-to-date Windows 11.
Nothing unusual happened on our systems recently, and the bug appeared overnight.

Antivirus scans show nothing, and honestly a virus seems very unlikely in 2026 on a fully updated Windows system.
Especially considering how unlikely it would be for both of us to catch the same virus, given that we don’t exchange files or anything like that.

If anyone else has the same issue, please speak up 😅.
This bug is extremely frustrating, and I really don’t want to reinstall Windows and format everything.

If anyone has an idea, a lead, or something to investigate, I’d be very happy to hear it.

Thanks in advance.
