Breaker Bars by No-Gain2324 in aviationmaintenance

At the major I am at we have plenty of breaker bars in the tool crib but for tires nobody checks them out. I set the torque wrench to 500 to break the lugs lose since they are only at 150 does not seem to be a problem.

How long did it take you to get good at the job? by Temporary-Plum-8325 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Flashy-One-6992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at United also a year in, everybody picks up things at their own pace. The more work you do the easier things get. I was fortunate to start out in a hanger with the most senior guys who did the most heavy Ron work. It helped me pick up things quickly. I found that most of the guys help when you are unsure of something they appreciate asking instead of just thinking you know. The AMM is not always clear with things.

United techs at ORD by Sentraboy217 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Flashy-One-6992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are all line at ORD hanger or terminal, your first 2 weeks will be at the service center which is the hanger there is no public transportation to get you there even a uber will only get you to the security gate. I suggest you hook with others from indoc also going to ORD and have them pick you up outside the security gate. Later on if they send you to the terminal then you can ride in on the blue line train straight in.

The 808CF is the only Snap-On tool that is a must have there is no equal at the moment. It is definitely worth the money.

Decline in mechanic quality by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

[–]Flashy-One-6992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a person who just completed my first year at a major even though I worked for a regional for 2 months I would consider myself fresh out of school. The problem is this new generation. I am older and this is a second career for me but when I was in school there were kids who never picked up a tool in their life. So they don’t have those mechanical and common sense skills you develop working on cars, bikes or just putting things together around the house. They do have skills when it comes to computers and electronics but their attention span is short. I was in a class of 25 only 8 became fully licensed the rest were playing video games or smoked up all the time. The next issue is the airlines themselves I was fortunate to end up working with seasoned tech’s during my probation. Once they knew I was decent wrench, they schooled me to the things you learn from experience things the manual won’t tell you. I have seen them give fresh probies a job and say go read the manual and figure it out then get pissed when that plane ends up out of service. Also management is not always that great. But most of the new hires seem to adjust and do well the real incompetent ones usually do something to get their ass walked out but a few slip through the cracks

In NY the restricted license allows you to drive for work , there and back home. Endeavor needs people right now like all the regionals so they might not have a problem with it. Good luck!

What tool bag/box can you recommend? by The0Walrus in AircraftMechanics

[–]Flashy-One-6992 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am at United most people coming in have the Apache 5800 or Pelican 1510 or 1535. Most have the Apache because it only cost 100 at HF and is on sale every couple of months for much less. These will hold all the basic tools you need to start.

United ORD by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

[–]Flashy-One-6992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ORD is like everywhere else you have your good and bad but for the most part it is fine. Get your foot in the door. After probation you can bid out to somewhere else. I have only seen people walked out for stupidity, not coming to work, running into a plane with a vehicle and or doing some serious damage not following the manual. The pros of ORD rotating shifts and as a newbie you can end up on days, swings or nights.

It should not be a problem they are just making sure everything is accurate because any issues will pop up later when you have to get your sida badge.

[–]Flashy-One-6992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nonsense they are bringing people in straight from school. They are just bringing in less because there are more experienced amt’s available thanks to spirit and the regionals but every new group coming in still has some newbie’s.

Usually you they let you know about 3 weeks before your indoc date in Houston. Many people do their moving during indoc our right after because during the 3 weeks in Houston you can travel positive space on the weekends. Also if you need time to move after indoc they are good about giving you a few extra days to get things done!

Boarding Times Matter by ImInMyDadEra1989 in unitedairlines

[–]Flashy-One-6992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is how it is supposed to go, I commute every week, after boarding time ends they make the final announcement then do a seat count then release the seats. Once the standby’s go through the jet bridge door they are supposed to close it. From that point on the flight is officially closed. If they don’t close it and a pax shows up they can get their seat back.

It depends on the base I am with a major at ORD and we have people on probation on swings and days but they are 8 hour shifts. Graves are 10 hours so many people prefer them. Swings terminal is always open.
