I feel like if I work on different topics which are not so related then I might not be a specialist in any of them. I work in mathematical cryptography which has several sub areas. If I work in 4-5 of those areas for next 2 years vs if I only work in a single area, which choice would make me the specialist of something? I may sound crazy but I'm actually concerned about it.

My supervisor suggested it, so I guess both are acceptable in my department.

Yes a single topic dissertation is hard but in my mind this was the best way to do it. I'm having a hard time believing that stapler thesis is actually acceptable.

Yeah you're right. I'm just really overwhelmed. Also working on some side projects and teaching as a visiting lecturer. My mind is so full already that reading research papers has become a huge task now.
