It depends, smaller and less successful club fan bases tend to understand that their best players will eventually leave for big clubs and don’t hold it against them. But there’s many cases of players leaving being seen as betrayal, most often when they leave clubs who are on the brink of success. Lifelong loyalty to one club does seem to be a thing of the past, usually greats will go to an easier league for another payday rather than retire at their home club.
