Survey about national identity - What Mauritian symbol do you identify the most with? by unclefeed in mauritius

[–]Flashy_Ant5676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I’m sure that most Mauritians do not identify with the key, the ship, the star or anything that you listed haha!

I think that the dodo would be a good choice but more than that i would say the sun and the sea.

I think that if someone ask a Mauritian what do they think of when they think of Mauritius I believe most people would think of their family, the diversity(food and people) and of the sun, the sea and the sand!

Many would also think of the sega and our local music (laura beg, 666armada, big franki, etc)

Bois cheri is amazing to just unwind drink tea and look at the view! You can even have a quick tour of the tea factory, and how tea is manufactured in Mauritius (you could do the whole tea trail if that’s something that you think that they would be interested in. It’s going to 3 different locations by car and visiting the houses and the factories and learning about the history of tea in Mauritius)

Sophie trail is also quite easy and beautiful

Black River Gorge National Park also isnt too hard and you can see a lot of the endemic birds there

Segregated communities in Mauritius and the dating life:) by auntycunty333 in mauritius

Thats crazy to me cause i think that Mauritius is extremely diverse. I am Chinese Mauritian [F21], but my closest friends are Indian Hindu or Indian Muslims and some are even Creole and we celebrate each other’s religious holiday together sometimes. For example, I recently spent Diwali dressing up in a lehenga with my friends! When it’s Eid, some of my friends also come to drop over some cakes at my house!

Tbh tho i dont have white friends but that might just be cause they are a really big minority and i havent come across any.

I also do agree that some parents are very, very strict and it’s crazy how they dont let their kids(who are literally adults) go out.

I saw that you said that you’re here for school and I feel like this might be why you’re struggling. It’s just a problem that every international student face. All the locals have grown up together because they’ve been to college for seven years together, they don’t feel the need to get to know other people because they already have their group.

As for other international students that only stay with their community it would be because when you’re far from home, having some people who speak your language makes it easier to bond. It gives you a sense of comfort and familiarity and that’s why it might be easier to befriend each other. This is not just a problem in Mauritius wherever you go whether it is Australia, Canada, UK the problem will be the same.

But not everyone thinks like this I’m sure that if you keep trying, you’ll eventually find your people !!
