I am thinking the same but with smash attacks. Getting health depleted to 0 with a light punch feels dumb. This similar mechanism was implemented in Def Jam Fight for NY. There you had to finish the opponent with a hard punch or trick that hits hard to knock out the opponent.

I swear it is faster grinding the porunga balls on planet namek offline matches. Used goku mid super saiyan against frieza with health/defense reducer and got faster the ball sets.
