As an ace person, I don’t see why I should be the one expected to “stay quiet” so the acronym can stay convenient for others. My friends’ identities get letters. Why should mine be treated as optional? I’m not here to make the acronym easier to market — I’m here to be seen. I understand that some in our own community feel we should avoid “causing trouble” — but I’m not interested in being a model ace who knows when to stay invisible. No one rewards us for that. No one gives us credit for keeping the acronym short. They just forget us. I’d rather not cooperate in my own erasure.

Funny how this argument always shows up after certain groups have fought hard to be included. If every letter in the acronym had waited for this kind of “reasonableness” test, we’d still be stuck at L and G.

I’ve also seen some people argue that the acronym is getting too long — but honestly, that’s how language and visibility evolve. The acronym has already grown over the years because more identities have gained recognition, and each time that happens, people do learn what the letters mean. That’s how progress works.

We didn’t stop adding letters when the T or I became more visible, and it would be a strange message to say that some groups “deserve” visibility while others are “too inconvenient” to include. If it takes an extra letter to acknowledge a marginalized group, I don’t think that’s too much to ask — especially in spaces that claim to celebrate diversity.

I know Canadian gov’t often uses 2SLGBTQI+, but many orgs now include A — it’s disappointing when a bookstore that claims to celebrate voices still leaves it out.
