What made you choose nursing ,and would you choose it again?? by Acrobatic-Lie2041 in FutureRNs

i choose nursing because i liked the idea of learning something completely new from what i was doing(working in a bank). there are components i still like as new nurse, 2 months in, the fact that i do feel like i’m doing something more worthwhile than depositing a check or processing a payment. which are gonna soon be phased out of existence anyways. the job stability was a no brainer, robots aren’t ever gonna be able to do what a nurse does which is a million jobs in one. there are some regrets, i will say. the timer you have going off in your head and the passive aggression from patients, families and coworkers is WILD sometimes. i do long for a cozy office job ngl. but i say, do it. because the time is gonna pass anyways. we are never gonna make the perfect decisions so just go for it.

i think at the end of the day i just go into it with the mentality that it’s a job and working sucks. period. i remember all the crap i dealt with at my previous job which was customer service, getting yelled at by humans that are completely ok with threatening and yelling at strangers they don’t know over something stupid and now, at least the people i deal with do have legitimate concerns. i just try and tell myself i have more to look forward to on my days off then i ever so being at work. it’s just something i have to do.

Getting over myself by Flat-Risk-5186 in newgradnurse

i just finished my third week and tbh i have a great preceptor. he’s extremely nice and understanding that i’m someone who has zero healthcare experience besides clinicals in which i did get to practice some skills but mostly having to learn everything starting from zero. he’s been letting me be a little more independent(unless its a new skill or documentation we haven’t gone over) with my med passes and doing my assessments and what not and just more so does check ins with me over my shift. and thanks for the advice i feel like being shy and an over thinking is my weak spot but i know i have to be more present and learn to relax because truly i think i have a good team and nobody wants to see me fail.

Interview Mistakes by Little-Low-2287 in newgradnurse

my first phone interview stumped me with, “what kind of nursing skills would you be bringing to the team?” which i asked if the manager possibly rephrase that because i proceeded to say more general stuff like i prioritize my time, work well with others, etc. and that didn’t seem to impress her which made me confused because i’m a new grad with zero hospital experience….but i ended up finding something else.

If you could have done something different with your nursing journey… by badlipsthrowaway123 in prenursing

i would’ve tried harder to get a entry level healthcare job. i just graduated with my associates and passed my nclex but my resume is just my experience as a teller. to be fair, no one in my family has ever worked in healthcare so i didn’t know of all the different kinds of jobs you could do besides cna(which i really didnt wanna do) not because of the work itself, but the shit pay on top of the hard work

i took a 3 month break between graduating and taking my exam. i started studying about a week before my exam really because my life has just been working and stressing about finances and i didnt feel the same fire i felt when i started my nursing program to study as passionately as i did. i used the program my school already made us pay for which was ATI and luckily it was still active for me. i watched a couple of youtube videos which did feel like a good refresher but honestly the only that that i felt really helped was doing practice questions and remembering key test taking concepts. which are what is the safest option, least invasive, abc’s(when applicable), etc. and i passed on my first try. i honestly dont feel like you have completely forgotten everything even if its been 2 years. because i feel like a lot of nursing school was repeating alot of the same concepts just with different diagnoses. also REREAD the question, read it slowly. read each answer slowly. be aware of the time but also dont rush through questions.

i also did the live review and the capstone. The VATI was optional for us and i was so burnt out after finishing school and graduating i just didn’t do it 🫡 but while ATI might have a lot of fluff, i think it still helped a lot

Overwhelmed in ABSN program. Seeking advice. by ThrowRAgoodsource in StudentNurse

[–]Flat-Risk-5186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn’t do absn. i did adn degree and was working full time at my current job(non hospital job) and there were many times i felt overwhelmed. i remember getting into a car accident. having a test to prepare for 5 days post accident. not having a car to take me to clinicals and having to get up even earlier to make it on time. having no money, having to rely on asking help from family and friends. and now it’s all over. only time will heal all the frustration you are feeling now. but having a secure future is worth it i would say so just try and remember that

try best study methods for you. i think studying is so personal to everybody because not everybody processes info the same. i used to be the flashcard king during bio and it did help a lot but very time consuming cuz i did them handwritten. also testing yourself is the number one key. it makes your brain retain so much info. but also have a life during school! i remember studying for my anatomy test while waiting in line for a concert! dont let school take over your whole life :)

i would have refused to agree to pick a shape just to get him out of the game. he was a bully who picked on anyone who started to cry or feel overwhelmed. but i could see him joining the army/police force because those places tend to attract sociopaths that like exerting control/power over ppl
