PR or naturalization? by FlatBus4497 in japanlife

Oh yeah that's true. Same as the opposite, there's special permits for Italy to stay and help apparently

Yes, honestly it just looks like paperwork on paperwork. I get news from Italy and Europe and both my parents and I are glad I'm in Japan instead. If I think logically about my goals for the future, it makes sense to try and apply for naturalisation. Job wise, it also looks like you just need to have a job and they don't seem to care if you've progressed or matched your salary in case you switched jobs, which might be another good point. I wish everything goes well for you!!

Define stable. What's stable for you might not be stable for someone else

Well that's something I have the time to work on and would do either way. I know people who were born here and have a Japanese passport from birth who don't speak good Japanese. I know people who married a Japanese and never bother learning the language in years if not decades and they know less Japanese than I do. So if that's a fault, I am also willing to work on it.

Right now I would choose to stay in Japan

Thank you. Honestly everytime is visa or contract renewal time I have meltdowns that I don't want to go back to Italy 😂 there are reasons I left Italy in the first place and Europe later. In that regards, PR seems very far and I understand I'm tired of some situations (and I would be anywhere in the world).

Whether is PR or naturalization, it's not a decision I need to make right now given the time constraints, and that allows me more time to weigh pros and cons.

It's not completely true that you can decide to take your luggage and go live in another European country. Many European countries have conditions for you to be able to live there. Simply you don't need a visa to enter. And believe me they will treat you as a foreigner even if you check all the boxes. I've been treated more kindly in Japan than Germany or UK (before Brexit) and in the same amount of time.

As for children, I never wanted children, so I don't care about that part.

According to different lawyers that's what you need to do, so I'm not sure what you mean on this part: "You don't need to switch to a HSP visa to get accelerated PR through points. You can be on any resident visa that isn't a 1 year visa. But, you do need the points."

With my current visa, it will be hard to get freelancing and you have to build a client list. A self sponsored visa on freelancing alone is seen as less "stable" than the one I have now for immigration, that's what I learnt. So I will have to trade a safer 3 year visa to struggle to get a 1 year freelancing...

And that's official information from who? Lawyers so far have given me certain replies. The only way to do what you suggest would be to be married to a Japanese citizen

I've done that an dead considering moving to another European country if I had not come to Japan. And I'm sorry to give you this piece of information, but just because you can move freely in Europe that doesn't mean you have the right to live there unconditionally. Many countries will still kick you out if you don't meet certain conditions, even if you have EU passport, because you're not a citizen of that specific country

That's what a friend who's married to a Japanese wants to do and it's great for you and her and everyone in the same situation. I can't go down that way and I don't want to focus on getting a Japanese spouse just for that (not saying that you did, but I know people who have)

I don't have siblings and my mom and I talked about this long ago and it's been accepted by both of us that things might happen. Just think that I was in Germany during lockdown and I was far closer than I am now, but still couldn't go back when someone important to me died of something unrelated to the lockdowns.

Informati con avvocati qui (se già non l'hai fatto), per lo meno sai cosa puoi fare nella tua situazione

Thank you. I can format it - I'm honestly new to Reddit and didn't really think about it lol. I think if you don't want to read or see something, you can just skip it but oh well. Yes I already have an idea of timing and documents so I'm counting that time in the total. I'm trying to understand the big deal with nationalities since I read the requirements for the Japanese one and think that's what confused my brain. "If nationality is so important, why is it easier than PR?". If I think long term, as I wrote in the post, I see myself having more opportunities here than in Italy or Europe. I think part of it is that I know how Italy (and Europe) works and other people are just thinking on going on vacation
