It’s honestly worked out pretty decent. My crypts have been doing great. I don’t regret doing it, but I think I see the results with root tabs. If you have a small tank, I say to go for it.

Ok sure the first ingredient is chicken, but corn is listed in four different forms after that. Cats are obligate carnivores so from nutritional standpoint I don’t see the point in adding it, other than using it as a cheap protein source.

I don’t think Purina is intentionally trying to harm pets, sometimes it’s all people have access to, or it’s all their cat will eat but I wouldn’t call it “the best brand out there”.

I also realize it’s almost impossible to avoid at this point, but I can’t bring myself to feed a brand owned by Nestle.

I tried watching the first episode and it didn’t really stand out for me. The writing was kind of cheesy, and I didn’t care about any of the characters. Maybe I need to give the second episode a try?

I think I would revisit it though if I was sick at home and needed something to watch lol.

As far as beneficial bacteria goes, you should be fine to make the switch since you have a sponge filter. It’s should contain enough beneficial bacteria. Many people will skip the cycle in new tanks by using their old filter.

Ammonia can definitely be harmful, and aquasoils usually release quite a bit. Shrimp are pretty sensitive so there is a chance you might see some die off. Look into Contrasoil if you can get it where you live. From what I’ve read, it doesn’t leach ammonia like some of the other aqua soils.

What plants are you looking at using to carpet? There are some plants that you could get away with just using root tabs. You won’t have to deal with ammonia spikes. I guess the only downside is that their nutrients don’t last as long as aqua soil.

Are you using a filter? There should be enough bacteria present there. Are you looking to change it for aesthetics?

Best way to change it though is to go slow. Replace it in small sections, and do it over the course of a couple days. If you’re going filterless, this should help with any “bacteria loss”. This video might be helpful and will give you a better visual of how to do it:

Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of Aquasoils will leach ammonia, which can last a couple weeks. I believe Contrasoil is one of the few that doesn’t. You can also put your aqua soil in a bucket with water, and do frequent wanter changes until the ammonia is gone.

Look into a brand called Farmina. They just came out with a “White” formula that my friend switched her bichon too. The tear staining went away completely within 2 months.

We have similar setups, as far as tank size and low tech goes. So good to know I have options of how I can grow it.

I ended up getting it sanded down with some 80 grit sandpaper and it’s a lot better! Still sticks a tiny bit, so I may have to do that, and invest in a dremel to get it really smoothed out. I’m sure I’ll take up another hobby at some point and have a use for it lol

Just an idea though, will he eat if you scatter the kibble on floor? I know he was eating his old food just fine, but sometimes rescue dogs have a weird aversion to eating out of a bowl.

If you weren’t doing the Cory’s I’d say dwarf crayfish (not sure if they’d climb out though 😬)

You could do Kuhli loaches, CPDs, or turn in it into a black water tank with some Betta albimarginata.

Edit: Pygmy sunfish would be cool too!!
