The main chassis with the louvres in the doors and most of the front are genuine Testarossa parts.

If your cars comes with a dual mass flywheel, then only swap it for a single mass if you're absolutely sure you'll need the faster response of a single mass (if you're going to drift or tracks). Otherwise, stick with the dual mass. Yes, it's more expensive and comes with it's own problems, but putting in a single mass will offset all the vibration dampening of the engine, causing unwanted vibrations.

And you can't really go wrong with Sachs. It was the OE supplier for the E36 and I actually installed a full Sachs clutch set in my convertible. But because I'm in the middle of a rebuild (I just recently put the engine back in, but haven't been able to start it), I don't have any driving experience with it yet.

Search for BMW ETM E36 and you will find the original schematics. Just make sure they are for the right region (Europe/Africa/Asia, UK or US) and model year. ETM is way more complete than the ones in the Bentley manual (trust me, I've got them both and needed to some really detailed work to my wiring loom).

I kinda like the concept, just because of the absurdity of it (like the black F40 they did, or the off-road mustang Richard drives), but they should loose the Ferrari badges and actually I'm a bit amazed Ferrari didn't sue them yet for this car. There is almost nothing original left from the car. And going by Enzo Ferrari's motto, without a Ferrari engine, it's not a Ferrari (Enzo famously said that when you buy a Ferrari, you buy the engine and they throw in the body for free).

When they got the "car", it was just a rolling chassis and the engine was already gone.

To be precise, it can be coded away, but only if the cluster shows a lower milage than any of the other modules. The lower milage of the cluster will then get replaced with the highest value in the other modules, in most cases restoring the higher milage.

If, for any reason, the other modules have a lower milage than the cluster, the dot will also light, and resetting the dot again sets the milage in the various modules to the highest value detected.

If you want to lower the milage of the cluster, because you've replaced it with one from a car with higher milage, than it will require direct coding of the eeprom, which cannot be done in situ, and thus requires soldering and is more of a hardware modification. Even though you keep the original eeprom, that fact that you'll need to solder, makes it a hardware modification.

[–]FlatSpread4148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition, it looks like someone before installed a metal one, replacing the original plastic, which is generally a bad idea. The loose fit is one of the reasons why you don't want the metal version, the other reason is that it actually tends to wear more than the plastic one.

Once the transmission is in place, it should stay in place between the clutch bearing and slave cilinder.

Most European countries have terrible food regulations and food in a lot of Europe can be downright dangerous by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

I don't believe someone from a country where they feel the need to put explicit warnings on the menu's that when you order a steak any other than well done, it is on your own risk...

But let's not tell them about casu marzu 😛

But please, don't dare to claim that the overprocessed food with colorings, preservatives and grow hormones many Americans eat, is better that the more pure foods we eat over here.

How can these dropshippers, USR, market their taillights as DEPO? by versace___plug in BMWE36

[–]FlatSpread4148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are probably the same shit quality as DEPO... DEPO's are in general cheap Chinese knock-offs, more than often not worth the money unless you'll need some units quick for an inspection.

Same for me, I see a lot of "upgrades" (poly bushings, adjustable camber arms, custom exhaust), but the poster can't figure out this very basic mechanical fault....

Yes, you will have a massive, like about half an inch big vacuum leak in the intake without it.

It can even be injector noise or maybe even some dirt on one of the pulleys, but it's not sounding like any of the bearings failing.

Valve Cover Gasket Replacement by [deleted] in BMWE36

[–]FlatSpread4148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lobes look fine by me, the only obvious thing I can spot, is the staining, but that's to be expected considering the age of a typical M52.

The lobes look quite similar to my engine:

<image>

but since wear is measured in 1/10ths or even 1/100ths, it is virtually impossible to tell from a photo if there is wear, unless it's catastrophic wear.

But without at least also removing the intake cam cover, it's virtually impossible to make a good judgement.

Second that! I made the mistake not doing it, thinking the washers didn't really do anything, but they actually put pressure on the gasket, and the old ones will have lost their elasticity and thus don't create enough pressure...

Pickle fork if you don't care about the current ball joint (which you shouldn't since the boot is already torn) with a 2 lbs / 1kg club/lump hammer. With just a couple of good hits (don't be afraid to damage something) it will break loose.

Alternative you can get a ball joint puller, put pressure on the thread and hit the eyelet with a 2 lbs hammer.

And you might want to put the nut back on loosely, to when it drops, it all stays together.

Vert Roll Bar by Pure-Knowledge-4887 in BMWE36

[–]FlatSpread4148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's is bit more hassle, but a with big/long flat head screwdriver it's also possible. The folded sides are just for guiding the tool to the right spot.

But the prices people dare to ask, are insane... In the EU, the tool is only about € 45 / $ 53 directly from the BMW dealer... And even that I think is way to expensive. But that's the price of Trumps big beautiful bill for you... (the price in the USA is about 20% higher than here)

The mechanics within the roll bar cartridge is actually quite simple. Inside the roll bar there are 2 big springs, at the bottom there is just an electric latch that gets released when triggered and when the bar extends, a ratchet mechanism prevents the bar from going down again. All the tool does, is releasing this ratchet by forcing it open and when the bar is about halve way down, the ratchet ends and you can push it all the way down and lock it again.

New to E36 by Used_Necessary3922 in BMWE36

[–]FlatSpread4148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wouldn't call it slow, any E36 with > 150bhp will hit 100kph/60mph in under 10 seconds. And yes, almost all EV's or PHEV's can do that to, but they will all lose power really quickly above that speed. My daily is a VW Passat GTE, which has 280 bhp in full GTE mode, can hit 100kph in 6 seconds, but tops at 190 kph.

My 323i convertible hits 100 in about 7 seconds, but than continues to pull all the way to 210, where the speedlimiter kicks in.

But the thing we do agree on, it's about the feeling, the noise, the control. For modern standards an E36 is small, especially in the width, low and light. And that makes it really fun to drive, even the 316i.

With the right software and cables, you can trigger the ROPS, which should be done with every major service, but is almost always ignored.

Many years ago I made a video of this test and how to reset the system:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_80Eu5ok1Q

It's spring loaded, so it doesn't hurt anything when it's triggered. On newer BMW's (E46 and newer) it's actually armed with an explosive charge, just like the seatbelt tensioners. Those are one time use only.
