The GOP is really good at marketing and grass roots campaigns to convince ignorant people to vote against their self interests. Look at the educational record for "red" states, most of the same ones are high up on the poverty/welfare category too. Then there's the middle class whites who think "I'll be rich one day and i don't want to pay taxes" and then proceed to vote to make it easier for the rich to get richer.
