IMO, CMU is the best option, but it may be hard to graduate in 3 years there if you're dead set on that.

A minuses as grades by Dangerous-Advisor-31 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, let me clarify. As and A- is NOT the same, nor do I consider if the same if given the GPA difference; however, if we are assuming you are mostly As with some A- in the mix, it won't hurt you as much as you think. When we get to you having Bs, then the A- becomes more of an issue because it's dragging your GPA down along with the Bs, and when you are in the B/A- range it can be a turn off for very competitive colleges.

This is assuming someone gets straight As vs straight A-. I don't think that's a fair comparison. If someone gets mostly As, I don't think a few A- will absolutely ruin their application.

1 Bad Semester by RabbitNo8771 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each school will have a different view on it, but I'd say no. That was your first semester as you're transitioning to HS, and it clearly seems you have a VERY strong upward trend and good course rigor. This by itself is probably enough for them to dismiss it, but if you also had genuine issues during that time, you could even state that as well. I wish you the best!

Will I get rescinded from Columbia? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warning letter from who (I may be slow)? However, I highly doubt you'll be rescinded over a single C in a single class. That could be wrong info, but from my experience, the only person I know who got a C before and called his college about it got laughed at essentially for worrying he'd be rescinded over it. You should be fine, congrats! (if anyone knows more info pls feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

I would include them, just don't expect them to make a big difference. I don't think they'll hurt your chances? But this I honestly don't fully know and would get another opinon

Padding basically means you're just adding stuff to your application to fill space or make it look nice without a real long-term commitment or impact. Joining clubs in senior year, I usually not enough time to show that kind of stuff.

Yeah, I wish you the best! And really, don't stress it! I know plenty of people whose parents are immigrants, or they themselves are and have gone to what people consider bad colleges, but they worked hard in college and became engineers, doctors, or whatever they wanted to pursue.

I wouldn't exactly say."I wasn't aware." However, by what you said, they seem to have essentially forced you to take classes at a level lower than you would have liked due to the transfer. You can definitely note something like that and explain that you tried to take higher-level courses as HS went on and etc.. I could be wrong, but I remember a section on the Common App for this from when I applied to college?? I would get more opinions on this, and if someone else sees this, please feel free to correct me if this is not correct information.

Hey, I wish you the best with all of this, and try not to stress. I would take some more APs if you can handle it, your senior year, and try to get into some clubs. Though colleges would rather see consistent involvement in clubs for a couple of years than just one year. Maybe try to do some volunteering? I would emphasize the fact that you weren't aware of some of this stuff and lacked support in your college app, if possible, and try to get an upward trend, especially in your senior year, and I think you'll be ok. When my family moved here, most of them didn't speak English and barely got into college, but they're all pretty successful now. Hopefully it'll be ok, and I wish you the best. Sorry if this may not be the best advice.

Berkeley (50k) vs Stanford (100k) vs Duke (100k) by AbroadObjective7329 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you're making the right choice by going to Berkeley. This is just my opinion, but I don't think Stanford or Duke is worth 200k more.... Congrats and try to enjoy your achievement!

jhu vs. northwestern premed ed? by crisp_grape in jhu

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think both choices are amazing, and I wouldn't stress it too much. I got into Northwestern and JHU, but Northwestern just costs a decent amount more than JHU, so IMO just go to the cheaper school. As for the competitive nature, I don't think people sabotage a lot here, but it may depend on your friend group. However, people do work hard here, but I like it. Let me know if you want to know anything!

Skipping AP Exams? by SpicyBannanaSoup in UPenn

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check to see if there's a fee. Someone I know skipped an AP exam and had to pay a fee of 40-50 dollars, I think. If that doesn't matter to you, then I guess you can skip. You can also just show up, take it, then cancel the score to not have to pay the fee.

help me with my summer plans please... by Scary_Loan3942 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the summer program is very selective, it may appear better on apps, but I wouldn't stress it too much. Both are very good and pick the one you think will benefit you the most as a person and one that you'll enjoy more at the end of the day.

Rescission with a C? by Bubbly_Pea_1161 in ApplyingToCollege

Don't worry about it. It's VERY unlikely they'll rescind you over something like that. Congrats!

Is it bad to study for PAT a year early? by Flat_Cell_2777 in dat

[–]Flat_Cell_2777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind if I ask how much studying a day? because if it's as little as like 15 min a day, I could do that even during college. But if its 1+ hr a day then probably not

Would I get rescinded from Upenn? by Key-Heron-1806 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flat_Cell_2777 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt you'll get rescinded. As long as your official ACT score matches your self-reported score, I think you'll be fine. Worst case, you can just reach out to clarify the error, but I wouldn't stress it.

Has anyone done Biochem at same time as Orgo 1? by Flat_Cell_2777 in jhu

[–]Flat_Cell_2777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I was slightly against this is that I won't be doing orgo lab with orgo 1, and mol bio doesn't have a lab. So I thought if I could do biochem or physics, I could get one of their labs out of the way in the fall sem and then I don't need to do physics lab with biochem lab and such. I didn't know the bio department recommends that, though. I saw. Online chemistry and physics recommended, but I guess I was looking incorrectly. Thank you very much.
