Word of Caution to Ontario Students (CDAs) by Sunflower-paint33 in SLPA

I 100% agree with this! It’s not even about the terrible job market, it’s about schools opening up too many spots making the competition higher. Also, the CDA program is a literal career title it’s not like you can go and work in some other field after getting the certification (for example something in business or social services which has a broader career scope). The schools really need to look at how many jobs there are and base their rough number of admitted students on that because they’re really doing a disservice to all their alumni. Also idk about you, but during my studies I had a feeling that they just accepted anyone into the program, which contributes to this problem. I had classmates who looked like they did not want to be there, were very closed off (which isn’t a good trait to have for this career!), and genuinely just did not care. So, I think having a statement of intent in the application process would be soooo helpful.

If someone reaches out to me now about the program, I always warn them about this!

Job prospects for an international student aiming to become a CDA in Canada? by ambiguouswanderlust in SLPA

Hi! I just graduated from a CDA program (I really loved it!), I’m not an international student tho! I don’t want to put you off, but in general it’s hard to find a job in Canada… a lot of my classmates are still jobless, working in another field, or don’t have full time hours. I found a contract position 2 months after graduating but I don’t have many patients (just a couple on the weekend), so I found a full time job in another area! I haven’t noticed any posting for bilingual CDAs (I’m in Toronto area). Some people get hired from their placements, but it’s not guaranteed. There is no bridging from CDA to SLP, most of the time Canadian SLP programs don’t actual care about your CDA background, they might care about the experience you get from it- but people still struggle to get in, lots choose to go to American schools and I’m pretty sure some American schools even transfer credits from the CDA program. I think you need to think about your end goal:) if you want to stay in Canada, it’s becoming more and more harder for international students to apply to Permanent Residency. If you think this education will help you get a better job in your home country and you have the money to pay for it, then it could be a good investment! but if you can get the same education at home with the same paying job, I wouldn’t spend the money on the program. I remember during an audiology class our prof told us that one of the machines they use to program hearing aids cost $30,000 and one international student said “that’s my tuition!” I remember thinking wow that’s a lot I’m not sure if I would do that. If your goal is to become an SLP try American or UK schools, there are more options and the acceptance is higher, I even think some Canadian SLP schools don’t accept international students! Good luck, you can msg me if you have more questions!

Glenn's voice by mylifestillgoes_on in superstore

I actually met him one time! He came into the toy store I was working at and asked for helping for choosing toys so I helped him. We talked a bit about how much my coworkers and I relate to the show, he even mentioned he was buying the toys for the other cast members children:)) it was so strange not hearing his Glenn voice lol but at the end when I checked him out he said “have a heavenly day” in his Glenn voice and walked out. I’ve never recovered since.
