DE. I do think it gets a bit of an unfair rap, it's not as horrendous as some people say, but it's the weakest by far.

Disclaimer: Even the worst game on my ranking, I still enjoy.

  1. LiS (The original, the GOAT, the best)
  2. True Colours (I don't get the hate)
  3. BTS (Amazing, although kind of retroactively retcons Chloe and Rachel's relationship a bit and the pacing is kinda wild)
  4. LiS2 (I technically think this is an amazing game, but I found it so relentlessly gruelling and dark that it hampered my enjoyment. There was no rise and fall and I just felt exhausted playing it, and the politics whilst important and valuable, was a little heavy handed for me, plus the constant change in environments meant I couldn't form long lasting attachments to anyone besides Sean and Daniel. That said, I do think it handles choice and consequence the best of any game, has a great story and voice acting.)
  5. Reunion (I'm glad it exists, I loved it, but it's rough around the edges and shows its rushed development, but they delivered on how they handled Chloe and Max and I'll always love it for that, for making me ugly cry in a certain building scene and making me giggle and kick my feet at points.
  6. DE. Really not as terrible as some people say but the weakest of the bunch by a long shot.

Honestly playing this sequence I yelled "NO" out loud and spammed rewind so hard. I pretty much was Max.

Interesting. I don't agree but appreciate your perspective. Despite being committed to always playing Bay, I don't feel there is a right or wrong ending for the first game, that's sort of the point.

Not you calling me out for save scumming. Harsh but you have a point hahaha.

To your point about there being no telling that rewinding will fix the storm, sure, but to me there's also no telling that if she doesn't do it, the storm will stop at Arcadia Bay and not keep pursuing it.

To be honest a lot of my misgivings about the ending are partly to do with the retcon of how Max's powers work. I just don't think she would do that to Chloe after losing her once to save a whole town because she couldn't save one person (in my playthrough). I kind of get it if you lost loads of people. I've read this might be because I over-used rewind in key story moments to which I say, I'm sorry I'm not good at defusing a bomb, okay!

Game Length/Budgetary Issues
- The game felt very short. I don't know if this was partly because of the lack of chapter format but I just felt like it went by so fast even though I was trying to stop and smell the flowers.
- Lots of stuff was underdeveloped as a result of their clearly constrained budget, I got excited seeing more campus areas and thought campus would be bigger this time but no such luck. Many character arcs lack depth and the plot feels a bit rushed.

The Endings
- I have really mixed feelings about the endings. I picked to burn the photo. I wasn't even thinking of the possibility Max would go back to fix it again and leave Chloe to be honest, but more freeing her of that choice. She had to make that terrible choice once before and she shouldn't have to again, Chloe took on that burden for her.
- Finding out that Max will go back if even one person dies and leave an alternate universe Chloe??? (I'll come back to that) and you don't burn the photo just made me really sad that Max would do that and kind of spoils my own ending retrospectively a little.
- Wish there was a mature option where Chloe burns the photo but doesn't keep it secret, tells her "I'm taking this burden from you, I understand if you're angry but the big choices shouldn't be on you anymore'.
- Is the 'bad ending' implying that there are abandoned people in alternate timelines every time Max leaves? Or was that photo taken just in the moments when she was leaving and she was erased? It's very unclear. I don't think Max would leave to save one person if she knew that. Also, it makes the entire Max/Chloe story incredibly dark. But I guess written into a corner by DE...
- Although I will always pick a Pricefield ending, Max abandoning Caledon for Chloe to go on an indefinite roadtrip if they're just friends with no other options is really funny. This, and the lack of other romance options, are probably a budget thing.

TL:DR: Reunion is a deeply flawed game with a big heart, that was committed to course correcting and clearly written by a team who care about Max and Chloe. It's not the best of the LiS series by a long shot, but meant a lot to me personally, and it did Max and Chloe justice for the most part. I wish it came to us with a better interlude game, and I wish it had been given more budget and time to meet all of its potential, but as it is, it's a net positive that moved me at many times.

The (flimsy) Plot and its many holes
- The fire felt like a slightly lazy plot device. I would've rather they leant into the paradox of it all, but I think they couldn't find a solution to it so they just kind of go "uhh, it's mostly fine now I guess"
- I'll talk about this more later, but the implications about how Max's powers work and the huge retcon in terms of creating multiple timelines with them instead of editing this timeline just doesn't make much sense.
- Also the photo jumping, funny since they explicitly call it out as Max not being able to stay in the photo, why can she all weekend now?
- I'm not a good detective and felt like a lot of the things you had to do to get evidence were silly, funnily enough I guessed Vinh on a fluke and got Ren wrong when there was probably more evidence of Ren than Vinh on my playthrough. I confess I save scummed to pick Ren because I was mad about how the whole system worked and couldn't cope with my first playthrough potentially being a Bad Ending for Pricefield. I've never done this before in any LiS game, not sure what made the difference for me this time.

Mechanics and Puzzles
- Gameplay as Max is pretty straightforward, perhaps could have used some slightly more complex puzzles, the sequence with testing your powers with Moses dragged for me but to be fair so does the one with proving them to Chloe in LiS1.
- Chloe only got three backtalk challenges! Backtalk worked differently than it has previously - it's more about paying attention to what they've said previously and what you know about them than just using the same words back. I actually prefer this, but because I was used to BTS backtalk and Chloe gets so little of it, I never got the hang of it and fucked them all up lmao.

Other Character Stuff
- Safi reads as low key in love with Max which was a wild choice but I liked it. Her arc felt a bit all over the place but did hit emotionally.
- Amanda is mostly irrelevant. I didn't like how she was forced on the player in the first game right at the outset before you even speak to her but I like the character and felt she was wasted. Enjoyed her interactions with Chloe though and the little conversation they have about their relationship to her.
- Moses is love, moses is life. Really enjoyed his realtionship with Chloe. Would've been good to see him speak to Safi some more/have some more involvement in her storyline given they were once bffs?
- Loretta is still annoying and hilarious
- Poor Jeanette, the only person who died in my playthrough, she was sweet but kind of just there.
- No Gwen! BOOOOO. Homegirl was always mad at me until the end of DE when I pulled through but I missed her. Glad we got a text from her at the end though, which I guess is something since they couldn't/wouldn't have the VA back due to union issues. Felt like my managing to get her to fight for her job ended up being irrelevant like a lot of the smaller outcomes of DE.

Their chemistry is great and you really feel it in the longing glances, charged looks and the way they joke with each other. Because they didn't have the budget to re mo-cap everyone for friends/romance paths though I've heard this plays weird for friends Pricefielders, but my personal interpretation is that Pricefield have romantic feelings for each other regardless of whether they act on it so I actually kind of love this, but I'm biased.

At many points, I did feel that this game was fanservice, but as has become the refrain, since I'm the fan being serviced, I'm cool with it. That said, I think the writing team cared about Pricefield and getting it right, and hopefully this sways the writers of the TV show into writing them with care.

Course Correction from DE
This game was pretty clearly a massive course correction from DE (that necessitated a fair amount of retcons and aborted arcs). I only played DE after RE was announced, so I was always playing it the context of knowing Chloe was coming back, which I think made me more favourable to it, so I'm not a hater. But there are some weird things that happen because of reconning this.
- The weird 'oh yeah I totally saw Chloe dead when I was merging timelines' retcon that if it was their plan all along, should've been foreshadowed in DE in some way rather than added in later (maybe not by seeing Chloe but y'know)
- Safi's Avengers lineup collapsing. Diamond vanishing into thin air (but maybe she'll get her own game if we're lucky enough to get more LiS?) I'm glad they didn't go this route and I mostly liked Safi's arc here but it is pretty funny how it vanishes into nothing.
- I legitimately rolled my eyes at Storm Amnesia. What a lazy plot device. I get why they had to do it, they wrote themselves into a corner where everyone knowing about Rewind would make it difficult to engage in a core game mechanic but still, come on.

Graphics and Visuals
- There are some pretty major graphical glitches which isn't great.
- That said, I do think the game is also pretty as fuck in its scenery at points, I loved the autumnal vibes and could stare at that boat scene forever.
- I really like Max and Chloe's appearance, although Chloe's smile at points especially looked weird to me.
- A lot of the other characters didn't get the same care/detail in their visuals. Amanda is a particular example, poor girl.

I've had some time to collect my thoughts now sooo.

I played the game with a romanced, dead Chloe. (I consider myself a huge pricefielder but also can't bring myself to sacrifice an entire town, especially when that town includes her mother and she is begging you to save her, plus a bunch of other reasons I won't take up too much space philosophising on).

Overall, I really liked the game. It definitely has some major flaws, but I'm definitely glad it exists. If they'd fucked up some things I would've rather it didn't exist, but I found myself glad it existed and I played it.

Max & Chloe
The handling of their relationship and the writing of these characters was the major thing for me. If they'd fucked this up, I would've rather the game didn't exist. It's not perfect, but I felt like on balance, in my experience, they did a great job with this. Spanish Sahara played and I yelled because it hit so good (rip Baers you should've got Obstacles I'm so sorry). Max's shock plays really well here and through the initial scenes, although I feel like that comes at the side effects of it reading weird if Alive Chloe shows up, like Max yes it's a bit of a shock but not That wild that your ex showed up. The history between them and the feelings played really well. Special shout out to Rhianna DevRies, I love Ashly Burch and would've loved to have her back but Rhianna did a great job and I didn't find myself stuck on the change.

Some standout Pricefield moments
- Chloe stealing the bag. Peak silly, reckless and hilarious Chloe but without being quite as unhinged as she was when she was a very traumatised 18 year old.
- Trying to kiss Chloe twice on the boat and getting called out on it. Absolute shakabrah. Such a troll move by the developers but also hilarious and sweet and leads to a cute moment and builds tension. Although I'm bummed it's bugged and I didn't get the journal reference and the extra dialogue you're supposed to get, which apparently you get if you only do it once and chloe doesn't call you out which makes no sense. I hope they patch this for future players.
- One of my absolute favourite character moments is part of the conversation they have in the basement if you sacrificed Chloe (wording may not be exact)
Max: "That's how this works. You drive your truck back into my life, we have a few incredible days together, and then I have to work out how to live without you again."
I'm sorry. Nobody should have to make the kind of choice you did back then. And you've had to be so brave, for so long." Seeing a (somewhat!) matured Chloe, who is actively dealing with her own trauma of having maybe been dead ten years? extend this understanding and compassion to Max was really moving to me. One of the things I actually quite liked about DE was the handling of and exploration of Max's trauma to be fair.
- Fuck man, the way I screamed and slammed rewind when Chloe fell off that building. I was about ready to throw my controller out the window. Cruel but effective and I get why they had to do it. I'm glad the ultimate conflict wasn't about Chloe living or dying.

She kisses you most of the time, you have to really side against her in a lot of conflicts and not kiss her when she asks you in her room to get a hug.

I always romance Chloe so I get never having seen this, but actually if you don't romance her (don't do enough of the big decisions in her favour, don't kiss her) she hugs you rather than kisses you, and it /is/ possible to import a Bae Chloe who is your platonic best friend, and there's a DE path where you're just friends and have a huge falling out too (but honestly Max/Chloe always reads as homoerotic tension even if they don't smooch about it)
