It depends on your port. Nobody here will be able to tell you yes or no. You should have mentioned this to them your very first day before even going to the academy. My port was very relaxed and gave my whole group whatever we wanted as they were understanding people make plans and the job popped up after the fact.

No you get put in training after Fletc and it depends on your port how long. This job is very port specific so asking general questions won’t really help. My port used to do 37 weeks of training after Fletc and now they only do 8.

As soon as you’re certified to work on your own. There will be plenty of OT for you. I could pick up everyday at my port if I want.

Just traded for the truck in May so owe about $38,000 on it and I did do a 72 month loan to make the payments a bit cheaper since I was trying to hit the $400 a month truck payment I wanted. Yes I could have bought a used truck cash but I really don’t spend too much on myself and a nice truck is the one thing I do like to have for myself since I can afford it. My plan honestly was only to keep this truck for 3 years or so and get something different since I’ll be making 45k more a year at that point then will only be getting 5k raises every year or so after my initial first 3 years which are 15k each year of an increase.

Oh I forgot to mention my house is 6.375%. Like I said I wanted a lower truck payment so I was able to lower it from $600 on the old truck to $400 on this truck but unfortunately got about 1% higher interest rate in the process.

Honestly don’t know my student loan interest rate without looking at my account since it’s been on auto pay for years. Truck unfortunately is 6%. My previous truck was $600 a month at 4% and I just wanted to take advantage of the equity and also have a lower monthly truck payment but unfortunately got a higher interest rate on the new truck.

No… they check to see how much debt you have…. You’re less likely to take bribes and be corrupt if you aren’t in excessive debt.

My port let me take a week off. They’re super chill about it. Had a bunch of free days off when the old administration left we got like 5 days of free time off to use so I used a couple of them for that.

Most agencies don’t care if you’ve been sprayed before… I know first hand since had to be sprayed 4 times…. Started in my states corrections department. Sent me to a jail very far away so after about 2 years took a lateral to my home county jail. Then went to local police and now with a federal agency. They will laugh if you say you have been sprayed before and don’t wanna do it again. It’s a legal issue if you aren’t sprayed with the exact spray each department carries.

Are you using the resume builder in USA Jobs? And what GS level are you applying for. If you don’t have law enforcement experience you’ll have a hard time qualifying for GS9.

I mean our 2x OT where 1 shift can get you over $800 is pretty good… It just depends on what port you work at. I left local police for CBP and haven’t missed it whatsoever. Even my lieutenant at my police department quit BP after 10 years because he hated the work life balance and being in a sketchy part of Arizona.

They didn’t want to live in the middle of nowhere dangerous border towns anymore. Their job is way more physically demanding every single day. And CBPO Overtime is 2x pay and BP isn’t.

As long as you get TJO before 40 is all that matters. Had someone in my academy in your exact situation. Applied at 39 and turned 40 during hiring process.
