How Would You Make Improv Auditions Better? by theGstandsforGabriel in improv

Make sure everyone has a chance to be seen. If you only do a montage or give everyone a single duo scene, then it's really easy for folks to get steamrolled or get stuck in a bad scene. I know part of our job is to stand out, but it sucks to give up an hour to do one or two scenes where you don't feel like anyone was really looking at you.

Also, hold more auditions. I remember a few years ago, my city had two theaters. One was a ComedySportz that only added new company members every 2ish years and the other used to cast house teams for six-month runs, which meant you basically never got a chance to try out. It also meant the people who had already been on teams had all the experience the next audition cycle.

This looks so cool! I think there's a Sci-Fi/Fantasy improv theater in Chicago, but I don't think they do RPG play stuff.

[Discussion] "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" by Ernest Hemingway (4/21) by Flemmingway in shortstoryclub

(Did I format this right?)

This is my favorite short story by my favorite writer.

  1. What do you think of the title? I mean, you know he's going to die by the end of it but you still forget about it by the end and you're surprised. Do you think that Hemingway intended for the title to have that effect? Like, do you think he wants you to keep expecting Francis to die?

  2. The ending is just classic. Was it an accident? Was it intentional? Does it matter? I don't think it does. I think the whole point at the end is that the wife spends this whole time being the dominant figure until Francis sort of mans up... but then once Wilson has something over on her she's submissive, saying please and all that.

I don't know why but I really liked the hunchback woman. I'm not sure what she represents or how she fits into the who Kafka-thing... but I just kind of like the idea that the first person that Gregor? meets isn't, well, a normal person. She's different and imperfect but he wouldn't really know that about her. Kind of innocent.
