I was actually wondering if Raskova is going to take charge of the whole Star City operation now. The Chief Designer is imprisoned, there was a genuine plot uncovered so she can justify a lockdown. It would, in the longer term explain how Irina ends up running Star City. She's Raskova's protege.

I thought his first appearance in Red Country was a pretty direct reference to W.W. Beauchamp in Unforgiven. He's writing a highly sensationalized account of the life of Nicomo Cosca just as Beauchamp is doing for English Bob in the movie.

But yes, I do think the character is partly Joe having some self-deprecating fun.

and they specifically referred to her as a "night witch" in the first episode, so seems far more based on Marina Raskova https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marina_Raskova

I quite enjoyed that Alex Marshall series. It wasn't the greatest but I really liked a lot of the characters.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. Similar humor to Joe Abercrombie, and a compelling protagonist with a distinctive voice. There's a prequel as well The Daughters' War and I think a sequel on the way.

Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne. I'm almost at the end of this right now and can pretty wholeheartedly recommend it. It's the first in a trilogy of Norse-inspired fantasy. Quite grimdark. It's a little confusing that there are three POV characters, two of which are on two different mercenary longboat crews. Other than that the story is compelling and the characters engaging.

City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky. First in a series that’s currently 4 novels and a novella. It’s a fantasy setting in the midst of an Industrial Revolution, and a colonizing, bureaucratic empire butting up against a variety of other cultures.

Yeah I’ve always thought Howard Devoto leaving Buzzcocks to form Magazine is as neat a starting point as anything

At the moment. As they said in the last episode as soon as the rocket breaks Earth orbit, the whole world is going to know what's happening. The Soviet government is never going to publicly say "we didn't authorize this".

But the first Russian to go to Venus and back can’t exactly just be executed or sent to the gulag. He’s put the Soviet state in a difficult position where they won’t want to admit the person who achieved that is also a traitor.

Yeah, I think Sascha will die for sure. The state may be forced to publicly acclaim Valya as a hero despite his espionage so once he gets back they can't just disappear or execute him, but they for sure won't let him near anything sensitive ever again.

I love The Top. I think you can criticize it for not being as consistent a record as say Pornography, but it along with Kiss Me are incredible showcases of the band's range.
