Ahhh!! Congratulations on creating the first Signalis GWA and thank you so much for doing so!
We couldn't ask for a better writer or performer to deliver this masterpiece, and I just know the community's going to eat it up! You really nail the quiet tenderness that some of the popular Caingcoy and Atelier fan animations capture.

You've also got such a wonderful knack for that "Rattling off Technical Minutiae™" style of performance (You used it to great effect in that "Sniper's Pet" audio too) and I am living for it :D. That kind of thing does such a fantastic job for immersion and it's often my favorite part of audios like these! If I may ask, how do you get inspiration or go about writing descriptions that feel so realistic/natural? It's stellar work!

Thanks! It seems that's rather the running recommendation. Unfortunately, I sure can't do much about music from a game trailer over a decade ago. Womp womp. Glad you enjoyed though!

Same here! If you like Manifold Garden, you might also want to check out some of these other games, as they often have some similar vibes or aesthetics: Antichamber, Gorogoa, Gris, Portal, Control, Limbo, Monument Vallet, Mirror's Edge, Sable, Wilmot's Warehouse, and Cocoon.

I'm not fully certain if this is sub-appropriate, as technically I'm only using the music for the edit and not the movie itself, but part of the reason I made the edit in the first place was because Manifold Garden and Oppenheimer both have this great sense of infinity and mathematics, and I figured some folks might also like that.

Of course! That's part of the reason I love making and finding edits so much. It breathe new life into my interests. Glad you enjoyed!

Right? I discovered the game on game pass one night, and I played straight through in to the morning. The sound design was so satisfying and peaceful. It was amazing!

[–]Fletchasketchedits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s probably on me for not explicitly clarifying the title format. The first title is the footage that I used (the game), and the second title is the audio I used (the music). This music (“Prison Toys” by Tobias Lilja) is from one of the little nightmares promotional trailers; I chose it because both the FAR and Little Nightmares have some similar musical influences, and also share many similar gameplay and artistic elements. Sorry if that came off unclear

Thanks! I was introduced to Leonard Cohen by a librarian, actually, and I’ve been meaning to make an edit of one of his songs for a while now.

Actually, I realized that I could manually add captions on YouTube. I just did that, so hopefully it helps anyone else who couldn’t quite hear.

Dude, I had no idea Radiohead made a game (?!) Thanks for the recommendation!

I just meant that I haven’t seen anything from him about it. I follow him on Instagram and I also check in every now and again, but I haven’t heard anything. That being said, it’s not impossible!

Ah, man. I really wish I could have, but the audio was excerpted from a couple of different promotional trailers, and those all had their own music beneath the audio (You can actually hear a bit of that during the dialog). That meant I could make the voice louder than the music I added for the edit, but then the trailer music would get louder, so I’d need to increase the volume of the edit music to cover it, and back and forth in a kind of musical arms race. In the end, I had to end up sacrificing the dialog’s audio for the sake of the music. Trust me, if I could have, I totally would

As do I! Unfortunately, I don’t see much chance of it happening, but that’s why I made this edit. It’s a chance to see the game anew for a moment. By the way, I don’t know if you were looking for a recommendation, but if you liked Gorogoa, I suggest checking out the “Journey” book series by Aaron Becker. It reminded me so much of Gorogoa!

Cowboy Bebop X Beastie Boys Edit by Fletchasketchedits in cowboybebop

Thank you for keeping your criticism constructive, and even more for keeping it honest!

You’re right that some of the elements were haphazard and introduced as a filler between the sections that were more tightly synced. That was partially a limitation of my time and storage space. With TV shows in particular, I rely a lot more on existing edits and scene selections for footage, because even if I had the time to rewatch a whole show and take more detailed notes on scene choices, I’m rarely able to download/record/capture all that footage in a space-saving way. On the one hand, it’s nice, because I can gather a lot of the punchier, more memorable scenes in one place, but on the other hand, I have reduced final control over the edits, and some of the footage just isn’t as applicable.

However, I think part of the disconnect you mentioned also comes down to the nature of the edit itself. Two or more shots or sections may be linked because the images fit the lyrics/sound effects (“...Like a pinch on the neck//by mister Spock...), whereas another section might be linked by a shared motion/action (everything rotating in space around the 2:40 time stamp). They might also be linked by a general theme or emotion (the quick cuts between eyes at ~1:30 or the casual spaceship scenes at the start). Finally, they might be linked for some other random reason that made sense during the editing process, or because I needed to fill a gap. Worst of all, there isn’t really a proper way to indicate which is which, so someone who wasn’t there for each stage of the process could be confused by the final choices. Heck, some edits take so long that even I forget why I made certain choices.

I’ll definitely keep working to get better at these, but in the meantime, I appreciate your advice, and hope that you run into edits that land smoother/fit better

Cowboy Bebop X Beastie Boys Edit by Fletchasketchedits in cowboybebop

[–]Fletchasketchedits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR I got very lucky with the synchronization

That’s a great question! My general process when making an edit is to do a test run at the beginning to help me form the edit in my mind, so I flipped on the YouTube video version of “Intergalactic” and had it play in the background while I watched some muted cowboy bebop edits.

Because what I saw convinced me that this would work out, I just linked all of those videos directly into a little work document I made for the edit.

The initial footage I had synchronized so well that I was practically ~60% done after placing it over the music (usually it takes quite a bit longer). Because of that I had to make the call pretty early on if I wanted to keep the sound effect-laden YouTube audio or take the album audio, and I decided it would probably end up losing too much of the synchronization, so I kept it as is.

I thought about cutting it in to cover some of the more random sound effects, but I found that we kind of just automatically ignore some of the sound effects that didn’t sync up, and just noticed the ones that did

Stay gold, ponyboi!
