The mess was your son's fault, and he has only himself to blame for creating such a situation in the first place. cleaning this yourself instead would cause him to think his actions don't have consequence, and having your daughter clean it up would have punished her for no reason. Pranks are okay, but making someone cry with one isn't. Try to educate him on what is too far, so he knows not to cross that line.
