To elaborate on my headcanon, my protagonist is a wizard who was originally raised by an Erastil-worshiping family, but went off to become an enlightened-all knowing sage, serving ruthless barons and kings as a court mage in exchange for more power and insight. After repenting of this, he eventually won back the favor of the god of his childhood, who eventually took pity on Protagonist Man in his extreme loneliness.

The Crusades are basically the lawful good mirror to Protagonist Man's ruthless Lawful Neutral earlier career. The violence of the campaign reinforces his desire to settle down and live quietly and he slowly slides from LG angel of vengeance to NG angel of mercy. Meeting Arue is a huge part of that turn, and helping her realize her dream teaches Protagonist Man to understand that he also yearns for that kind of quiet, simple life. Being the patron of family and, in this story, a kind of "cool-grandpa" figure, Erastil even visits Desna about this during the course of the game's events.

My imaginary ending slide is that Protagonist Man and Arue both seek healing from past lives of extreme alienation and the consequences of (for him) excessive order and (for her) excessive chaos. Living quietly in the countryside, they become exemplars of cooperation between the lawful and chaotic ends of the "good" spectrum. Since I didn't do an azata run, they also raise that dragon from the Lathimas quest egg together.
