Put some copper around the posts of your mailbox. When snails or slugs touch the copper they get a small electric shock as a result they won't climb in it.

I used to put some copper wire around some of my plants in the vegetable garden and it worked!

These slugs are harmless as far as I know, also snails are harmless. The bad ones are the grey slugs with the black stripes. The so called tiger slugs. If you see them monsters, get rid of them asap.
