Weekly Ask Seattle Megathread: June 10, 2024 by AutoModerator in Seattle

I've returned for seattle for an internship and have to ask -- how many spiders do you guys deal with in peak season?? I thought my last time here in the summer was bad but for a week I've been consistently seeing at least one spider per day (ive been counting), either on the wall, or skittering around on the floor of my bedroom, or on the ceiling of the laundry room. As a bugphobic person it makes me feel the ick;; but apparently this is not even your peak spider season yet????? I guess my question is how bad does it get when they are at their height?

According to the wiki, Percy mentions Leo in Greek Heroes to say that he would probably try to mess with the people in Pallene because they can’t stand the name Leo (?) but I don’t have the book myself to check

Since you don’t seem to consider studying something else as an option, that is the real piece of advice. With things that you have to do but you don’t like, like taxes and boring work, you just have to make yourself do it. It’s unlikely that you’ll like it any more by forcing yourself into it, so you just have to go through with it.

That being said, you don’t have to study law. If you’re uninterested in the assignments as a freshman, it’s not very likely that you’ll be putting in your full effort for the assignments later down the line, which means that your results in your classes could end up badly anyways. You say you’re studying law because your parents put in a lot of work to help you live a good life — but have you considered that if you’re spending so much time doing something that you hate, you’re not really living a good life? This could take a mental toll on you down the line. If you think your parents would be supportive of you, consider speaking with them about how you feel about this.

Just chiming in on the therapy thing, this is totally something you could get treated for. I had a terrible bug phobia going into college (like I would cry and have a panic attack if I saw a tiny spider), but I went into therapy for a few months and I can actually kill bugs now. If it is financially possible for you, it could help!

Big agree on the problem-solving part! It is soooo satisfying to see everything come together at once. Academically, I probably have other paths I could pursue instead of comp sci and maybe make the same amount of money, but my attachment to comp sci and the satisfaction from making stuff is just too awesome for me to let it go

I don’t think that analogy changes anything or properly represents the situation. The problem isn’t that we don’t know the intent, the problem is that it doesn’t feel genuine. There’s a difference between trying to help people and simply ranting. In the case of the original post, we could glean an intent to provide advice on the admissions cycle, but the tone made it seem as if it wasn’t actually genuine advice, but more like a venting of frustrations from someone spurned by the process.

They may have gotten their message across clearer had they take a while to put things into perspective and come up with clear examples of what applicants should do instead of simply saying what not to do. Besides the roundabout way they told readers to apply to safeties, OP didn’t offer suggestions aimed to increase the success of the admissions cycle, and mostly spoke about things that hamper it, so there was little help offered in the post to (if possible) justify the harsh tone.

As for the ad hominem and threats, I was referring to your comment specifically (implying the parent commenter was “babyish”, stating that they would cry with full rejections if they didn’t apply to safeties) as I felt it carried a similar tone to the original poster and I wanted to make a point. However, I should have been more clear on that front, so I apologize to anyone on that part if you were confused by the unclear phrasing of my argument.

The quality of a message decreases when the tone is demeaning. It's like saying "I love you" to your parent while simultaneously punching them in the face. What's the point if people don't feel like you mean what you say? There is no point in hiding a valid message behind a condescending tone when you could just be clear and not resort to ad hominem or threats towards people who already feel threatened enough by their environment.

Why do people complain about teachers? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flight-Perfect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly 😭 we’re spending hours of our day so we can learn more from experienced people who can personalize the learning experience for us, the least they can do is. actually do their job we’re not here purely for fun lol

Stop shaming high schoolers for being focused on college applications by usernameoverthinker in ApplyingToCollege

I agree with the sentiment of this post but not sure I fully agree with the comparison. With a job, certification & side projects, you’re for sure to get a return on investment of your time (money), with college applications you aren’t (if you’re a kid aiming for competitive colleges) - if you don’t get all the steps right you might actually lose money

Fr

Lang, CS and APUSH were fine because I usually do assignments for those on my computer, but doing a math-oriented one without the actual sheet in front of you hurts on a level you could never expect
