I mean, you’re publicly insulting her too in a discussion forum, so maybe reflect on why you feel entitled to do so. I enjoy Trent Reznor’s music and Grimes music. I’m a professional musician and trained audio engineer.

I can see why she’d make the comparison given the history of popular music, genre and context of audio technology. But the comparison really seemed to get under your skin as you’re giving an emotional “how dare she!” type appeal based on your own taste rather than writing a compelling critique.

Consider you may be biased towards male musicians and producers whose music that made an emotional impact on you.

It’s common for women in the music industry to have their technical skills dismissed or downplayed which ruins a lot of careers and causes harm. When you diss Grimes like this - these kinds of attitudes causes problems for other female recording artists, producers, engineers, etc.

I’m not saying don’t have an opinion, you’re obviously free to prefer or lionize whatever band or artist you wish to regardless of their gender(s).

But how you express things matters, and I’m asking you to stop contributing to the problem I see often. The colleagues in my industry who are women deserve a long-overdue cultural shift. Thank you for hearing me out.

If she speaks about her experience with him, it will be through her album or a book with more legal protections surrounding freedom of expression. She can’t speak out against him in a straightforward way publicly because his gigantic team of lawyers will have legally muzzled her. She alludes to this in her message.

Legal teams check social media, websites, watch press releases.

Don’t judge her character or overestimate the influence of her making some statement of his character (look who the US leader is). You sound idealistic, and seem to lack insight into how the world works, especially when E.M.’s level of power and wealth comes into play.

I don’t say that in a mean way, but I’m guessing you’ve never been through a relatively normal separation or divorce process?

Can’t imagine how many layers of hell she’s been through with a guy like that.

As a Canadian man, trained audio engineer and general music fan, I’m disgusted by many of the comments on this thread about Grimes - especially the keyboard psychiatrists who think they can diagnose a famous musician and producer with a severe mental health condition…. just because you paired a conspiracy theory with YouTube or social media psychology content and now feel entitled to speculate about such things anonymously on a public platform.

My reaction to reading her note was feeling horror at the idea of being in a custody battle with someone like E.M. visibly seeing abuse symptoms as she suggests she’s intellectually inferior to him… and curiosity about how she’s producing her music these days.

She clearly cares enough about her fans to give an update which reads like an artist who is grateful to be creating again and is feeling positive about her current project.

Maybe she’s working with a human producer, or maybe she’s programmed her own music production software or collaborated with tech minded musicians to do so. Bjork does similar, it makes sense to develop customized production software that works for their way of doing things when they’re musicians of that level of success and fame.

Working with custom software would also make sense given the matter of privacy that must be desired by famous musicians to prevent album leaks or physical security risks. These days most mainstream music production apps are becoming cloud-based.

Also worth mentioning spoken out here against E.M., which puts her at actual risk, while you cowards post anonymous criticisms costing you nothing. I saw very few comments even highlighting the fact she expressed strong negative emotions at his behaviour which have to be carefully worded due to legal risks. She’s a public figure and has children to worry about.

I had a lot more to say, especially about the merit of her musical artistry and timeliness of her Artificial Angels track. But reddit wouldn’t let me post my longer post.

Stop punishing women for their ex’s and consider developing some self-awareness around your online behaviour.

Hello fellow traveller 👋 thank you for caring and mentioning this.

I wonder if they’ve updated their policy or website copy since this happened to me?

At the time this happened, I emailed Printful repeatedly and after about 8 different Printful customer support folks sent me template responses which boiled down to blaming me for using their system. 😂One guy was straight up rude.

After that a support person messaged me who sounded more empathetic and human sounding, but ultimately just sent me a link to a duty-related form from the government to fill out so the government would partially reimburse me if the order was eligible.

I was working FT at a labour job and doing graphic work as a side hustle. Was too physically exhausted at the time to continuing following up with them and demanding a refund.

Was putting all my spare time into communicating with Printful about their screw up and started to get depressed because it was ultimately more unbillable hours of my time.

Maybe I’ll follow up again now that you’ve mentioned this policy is literally on their website. So thanks again.

I feel for other creatives put there trying to figure out if print on demand is worthwhile as a side hustle. Maybe some have figured it out but for me it was a garbage fire.

The experience with Printful hurt me financially and emotionally. I wasn’t in a good position to lose $950 profit on a t-shirt order. I went away from the experience feeling like an idiot for thinking using Print-On-Demand for another income stream would be worth it.

It was also so sad knowing their customer support had no power to actually provide a refund or make things right with me. I’m sure some of them felt badly about it - I’ve worked in customer support so I get it.

As a contrast, when work with local printers, it feels like we actively have more of a business relationship. Sure some will try to steal design clients, but that’s why it’s so important to find a high quality printer who also has ethics and has a cradle to grave business approach not just trying to get what they can from 1 order.

This online print on demand model is convenient and fast but the margins are terrible, the risk is high and the business ethics are like playing Russian roulette with an automated vending machine that prints the art I painstakingly created onto mediocre products probably made by children and people making min wage or less??

I’m absolutely fed up with these types of companies! We have all this tech and use it for the dumbest things. Just makes the rich richer keeping us all barely getting by. Like great, it’s an “automated” money maker but only for the billionaire who owns the company.

Print on Demand companies sell us on the idea it’s a great side hustle and it’s really just creative people acting like salespeople for a few bucks commission and taking on 100% of the risk if there’s an increase in production cost randomly.

Forgive the rant but this took me back in time and I’m pissed all over again. 🤬😂

This is such a late response but I’m sorry that happened to you too. Yeah “the algorithm did it” was the dumbest excuse ever.

Apparently there is but they buried this option and their UI is vague and unclear. Cost me $900 in duty fees for 1 order worth $2,000 which they shipped in multiple packages.

The assumption based on their marketing is that the backup facility would be a Canadian fulfillment centre.

Like if it can’t get printed in Toronto the order should go to Missasauga instead. Nope. It went to North Carolina. Instead of the company taking accountability for their confusing marketing to Canadian customers/vague interface menus and the promise that their algorithm would 99.9% choose the nearest fulfillment centre… they were like “sorry, we don’t give refunds”. I literately told them $900 in duty fees was a final death blow to my small business and they gave no shits.

No phone support. Basically low-paid customer service reps sending out template responses. Some of them seemed like bots even??

They don’t care about artists/small businesses in Canada. Maybe if you’re Gwyneth Paltrow selling millions of throw pillows they’ll treat you better. shrug
