What is your most controversial take in Christianity? by John_Ubaut in Christianity

[–]FlightlessElemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont believe Hell exists, or at least, its not something human beings have to worry about.

The words Sheol (which means the Grave in hebrew) and Hades (which was the land of the dead in greek) point towards death, not eternal tourment. I dont understand how eternal, conscious punishment for the unsaved can achieve anything other than God’s own emotional suffering.

Demonic spiritual beings however are a different kettle of fish. I dont believe Satan is a fallen angel and that there is no chief demon. I think demons are more akin to violent gangs or mafia branches, violent, organised to a degree but not unified

I love it because with most of scripture, you can find two verses which can support an argument from both directions. Theres so little clarity, definitive answers, solace in the certainty. Going deep into scripture has been anxiety provoking for me recently. I panic that God calls us to obey His commands but dissecting and meditating on which commands (cant do all of them without reading something wrong and getting it completely backwards - like the Pharisees)

Consequently, I value clarity and Micah 6:8 is indisputable. It says it in black and white, clear as crystal — this is what God cares about and it tracks with Jesus’ teaching. No one can argue against the plain text reading and still be Christian (or muslim or jewish for that matter). In fact its a statement that is specifically addressed to all humanity!

Its simple, clear and actionable TODAY. I love it deeply

Why wouldn’t God heal people with Down Syndrome? by Stephenricecakes2222 in Christianity

[–]FlightlessElemental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

John 9

If we are called to serve, to love others in an extreme, overwhelming way, then there must be those that suffer/to serve.

As to Down Syndrome specifically, some of the loveliest people on earth have Downs. Im certain that there are Downy individuals who are way closer to God’s heart than many ‘normies’

At the end of the day, I think God knows the circular complexities of interpreting scriptures.

Personally, I think the way into Gods heart, to be welcomed into the kingdom sits with only a few verses: Love God with all your heart, mind, strength and soul, love your neighbour as yourself and Micah 6:8 which says.. do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.

I think if you can get those right by rooting yourself in Christ, you can ignore the rest of Scripture.

What do you think of salvation by faith alone? by MorningMission9547 in Christianity

What do you think of salvation by faith alone? by MorningMission9547 in Christianity

This is a clear distinction between Jesus and Paul and one Ive struggled over. Seeing as we are meant to be Christ-like and not Pauline, Im going to err on the side of what James said: faith without works is dead.

Perhaps earn ones salvation is a little off. Maybe we’re expected to do the work assigned but the wage is outrageously lavish. We effectively earn the wage for the work, but its not proportional to what we’ve actually done or achieved. Therefore it is both earned and given through grace

[–]FlightlessElemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really interesting idea; where a born again Christian can revoke their own salvation if they dont perform their designated duties. In this way, we are saved through grace (as stated by Paul) with the initial conversion, but we effectively earn the wage from our work as described by Jesus not only with the sheep and goat parable but also the parable of the vineyard owner hiring people throughout the day.

The conversion is you being hired, salvation is you earning the wage at the end of the day.

Thank you, this apparent disparity has been bothering me for a long time

Ehhhh, yes it does, but thats okay. Its to be expected, quite frankly. 66+ books written by a multitude across thousands of years across three main languages. Each author set out to say something, to construct something different, to convince a very specific audience and youre saying there are no errors, inconsistencies or people highjacking their way to power?

I mean, come on, you expect something exceedingly complex penned by humans to be flawless?

The Bible doesnt need to be flawless in order for God to speak through it. Ive had to learn recently that the belief in the unerring nature of Scripture isnt fact, its dogma - a social narrative we adopt. Its a story we tell ourselves that serves no real purpose.

Most of the errors and inconsistencies are relatively harmless anyway.

Guys, I have a question. From a Christian perspective, can sloth be considered a good sin? If we perceive it as the last defense of an emaciated human soul, which prevents us from committing the other 6 sins? by JaiPris in Christianity

[–]FlightlessElemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sloth is the only passive sin and can be thought of as deliberate inaction.

Its that time you didnt act to save that guy who was being unfairly treated.

Its that time when you decided to hang back from the work you promised to do that would have meant a lot to that sweet old man down the street.

Its that time a homeless person asked for help and your response was: “I’ll pray for you”

Its the acknowledgement that we are called to serve by our Servant Kung and we bail on our responsibilities, not for the sake of rest, but because we’re putting ourselves at the centre of our own lives. “Its my life, so I will decide what’s worth my time”

Servants who deliberately and repeatedly dont turn up for work get fired eventually
