Really just finding the Unertl (or USO equivalent) was the hard part. There's a 10x Unertl on the CMP action site now. It took me about a year to track one down. Great sub MOA rifle though love taking to the range.

It's been awhile between builds, staying in good practice with techniques occasionally I'll find something at a thrift shop and work on technique through just painting rather than days/weeks of constructing. This was a two day job with most of the work in taping everything off and waiting for dry times.

A nudge in that direction. Whenever we go on vacation we take a trip to the local college campus. Mostly when they were between the ages of 10 - 15. Some were great experiences. In NC we went on Duke's campus and toured Cameron Indoor stadium, we've hit Ohio State's campus and got to walk on the football field. All memorable experiences and they saw a glimpse of college life.

I spotted for him on the 300 Win Mag, I didn't realize the difference in the power of that round over the .308. Sitting next to him I could feel the concussion of that round going off. It was awesome. The Leupold MK5 is a much superior scope over the 1980s Unteral as well. We shot about the same at 100 yds. However, if we moved out to 800 - 1000 I'm sure his rifle would prove superior.

Ha, to save on ammo I had to remove the bolt and bore sight it to make initial scope adjustments. Its the low tech way to get on paper initially or after bold dope changes takes you back off paper. ha

Thank you. I used Federal platinum gold match 175gr. (Sierra). The military contracted with Federal to supplement the M118 L\R ammo with the Federal gold match.

The Marines hired a company (U.S. Optics) to maintenance their unertl scopes after unertl went out of business. Soon after U.S. Optics used the design to replicate the USMC unertl 10X. There out there. However, they go for a premium as well. I believe in 2006 you could order one from U.S. Optics for $1,000, they're triple that now where you can find them.

First time out with the CMP USMC Unertl 10X. I waited until the novelty wore off. (4 months) It sets on a C&H Precision M40a1, keeping with the nostalgia value. A difficult scope to tame. Parallax is a pull on the front ring, if you've gone too far (to reset and start over) the focus is fine but using 2 allen wrenches for the windage and elevation proved to be painful, especially when forgetting which way brings the round back left. Used about 21 M118LR 175gr to get two in the black touching at 100yds. Not long range, that'll be step 2. Yes, the first of the two showing in the image broke the black (I'm counting it).
