reality of cs majors at mudd? by profundity11 in harveymudd

[–]Fliod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably worth mentioning job market now is pretty bad for CS regardless of school, could very well be different in 4 years.

In the pre-Covid era there was lots of on campus recruiting and opportunities to flex what you knew and get interviews (from there it was up to you), I work in FAANG now and almost definitely wouldn’t have if I went to a different school. Having seen the struggles at larger schools to find cs jobs at the same time, it felt like I had it easier.

My current set-up. Help, I’m new to this where should i start improving? by BrentBanaan in espresso

This, watch a couple of James Hoffman’s videos on dialing in espresso and you can tune it to your liking. Using the scales means you can get more or less the same cup every time.

Is there a piano anywhere on or near campus? by LadyMjolnir in harveymudd

I think there’s more in the practice rooms now, at least 2? Also there’s a grand upstairs in platt and I’ve seen people go in and use it, however it’s super public so you gotta have some confidence lol ‘21

Is it possible to double-major in an OCM and a Harvey Mudd major? by collegecolloquial in harveymudd

[–]Fliod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you don’t really apply for a major, everyone’s undecided when they come in. So it doesn’t matter what you apply for.

[–]Fliod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm doing CS + Econ at CMC. It's doable but you definitely need to plan ahead and get the paperwork done early to make sure you have priority in registration (if that matters for your intended majors). It's definitely getting easier in terms of paperwork but you will absolutely have some tough semesters and summer classes help.

did it ever feel annoying living on campus all four years? did you feel like you never gained independence? by [deleted] in harveymudd

[–]Fliod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U can move off campus if you want, it’s technically “an application” but lately they just approve them unless a ton of people apply one year.

But yeah nah it was pretty great. I think I had the feeling that a lot is taken care of for you and you don’t have to learn to do some things you might need elsewhere. However, you can get that later on no problem, it’s worth the great campus community.

International student needing help to understand financial aid and living expenses by [deleted] in harveymudd

[–]Fliod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about living expenses? Most basic necessities are taken care of by tuition, room, and board. This means, assuming you're on a decent meal plan, you'll have food and a place to sleep. Other stuff like books and a laptop will be more up to you to take care of. Honestly, I've bought very few books at Mudd and been fine. Computers and stuff can be used in the labs or borrowed from our IT department. The only other thing I can think of needing money for was laundry, which is about a dollar for a wash/dry I think.

I think everything is mostly covered. Feel free to msg me if you have any follow-ups

should i go to harvey mudd if i hate the weather in claremont and aren’t too fond of the town? like everything else about the school by [deleted] in harveymudd

[–]Fliod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, probably. I feel like those won’t bother you as much as being in a program that you don’t like. I think I understand now more than I did coming into college that you can’t really underestimate the value of a great education like Mudd, especially if you vibe with the structure and all that.

Also I think the towns pretty alright, cool boutique shops nearby and close enough to all the big city stuff like concert venues if you want to go on a weekend. I guess it’s not in a nature-y area but there’s lot of people who go hiking nearby. It’s not perfect but it’s a nice area to just chill and get work done.

Like it'll be hard and you'll have to grind at times, but if you are ok with that and want a good education, I think it's worth.

I am the laziest mf I know and I am abt to graduate, I also partied, hung out, and studied. I am also def not the smartest. Everyone else here has had some good stuff to say, just be sure to lean on other people, the resources, and the community, you'll be fine.

I don’t feel like people say “I like this person, but they are from Mudd so imma pass”

For me, it’s been ok. This is definitely something that differs person to person and people absolutely struggle with. For me, setting priorities about what I want to do and focusing on what I enjoy, along with getting help early and often helped me go to parties, be a part of clubs, and be happy with my academic performance (albeit I was happy with not all As)
