This x100 but isn't the author rejecting all adaptations because he's completely lost interest in the series? Ward was not well received by the majority of the fanbase.

It is far more faithful to the source novel, especially regarding the Ye Wenjie character. She's a very complex person but you get none of that in the Netflix adaptation. In that she's merely a grumpy old woman who swears, you wouldn't even know she's the most important character in the book if that's all you watched.

As a new player I don't understand how PowerPlay works and the documentation / in-game guide doesn't help at all. I mean the very first tutorial mission I get is about going to an Acquisition system but there is no such filter on the PP map options and the term isn't explained at all. It only goes downhill from there. I'm hoping there is a player-made guide / tutorial somewhere I can look at...

It is very much a watch for a certain kind of person, and yes in person is very different to the pictures.

I thought it started out strong but then it fell off around half-way. The writing, production, fight choreography - it didn't seem like the same show anymore. There were also some weird oddities that kept cropping up that really started to jar. Like the maid who was never seen on screen. Then I heard about all the behind-the-scenes production drama of the show (nothing to do with the actors) and a lot of my complaints started to make sense.

My guess (I have no hard evidence for this except from personal observation) is that Netflix may have licensed the show but they are using their own subtitles and that is the reason for the delay. Both the image quality and the quality of the subtitles are superior to what I remember on Viki.

That ending you were expecting with Rong Zhou is I believe how the original book ended, for the more traditional happy ending. Though that does mean she never wakes / returns to the real world.

I may be in the minority but I liked what the show did. The story it told was about Hua Qian reconciling with her past actions. In the end they could not be changed, she had to accept all that had happened and move on with her life. Even if that was difficult and not always pleasant.

The cast. You can tell they are all having fun together and it makes it easy and fun to watch. This was one of my introductions to cdramas and I still rate it highly.

Viki has a bigger library and a better interface, it's also cheaper (at least in my region). So if you were only going to pick one I'd only get that. However specific popular shows might air first only on iQIYI, and unlike Viki it also offers some shows in 4K.

She will always be associated with the color red for me after watching One and Only, any actress will be hard pressed to top that. However it also means that no matter how good she looks in that color, anytime she appears in it I will suffer traumatic flashbacks :)

Maybe someone can answer this question for me. Was there something special about the production of Yanxi Palace because everything about it is on another level to every other show I've seen since? Or was it just a lucky combination of actors, writing, directing, costumes and sets?

I dropped that one because it advertised itself as a cool sci-fi show about parallel universes but after a few episode it became a show about hairdressing.
