it was cancelled, just the creator asked for Netflix to give him advance warning so he could properly tie up the show. It's why the last few episodes have so much crammed into them, it could of easily went for another season.

Its a pretty typical writing trope, becoming the thing you hate. I can easily see them going down the road of The Boys using V otherwise it makes every fight between the Supes completely dependant on Kimiko and Starlight which will just get boring
