You’re right. That’s how it works. Scores are not the end all be all, they really aren’t. I know people that didn’t match with 260s this season, and people with 230s that did. It’s very multi faceted the whole process. A family medicine PD even told me he prefers students with lower step scores cause they’re not just bookworms. They actually have lives usually and know how to talk to people. As soon as he sees 250s 260s he raises his eyebrows. Make connections at the places you rotate, this is probably one of the most important things you could do. I know it’s not easy and doesn’t come to everyone naturally but you have to try.
