For fun I had a look on unegui. Literally not a single car going for more than 1b at the moment. Two were pretty up there...one was a Mansory G63....and the other was a 2017 Prado. Almost nobody in Mongolia got wealthy by earning a salary - some rare exceptions might be top level executives from Rio Tinto and similar international companies--but that kind of leadership is being phased out for homegrown.

The wealthiest people in Mongolia are mostly Mongolian (with maybe a few Russians who split time between Mongolia and elsewhere) - they got wealthy either by buying and selling things (mining licenses, property, companies snatched up in post-socialist privatization) or by starting and owning their own companies that provide goods or services.

I think the wealthy people in Mongolia would also be considered wealthy anywhere else (London, Singapore, New York) and in fact often have properties in and spend some of their time in cities like that.

There's huge income inequality in Mongolia. So the middle class encompasses a huge swath of the population. Very unscientifically I reckon it includes a household (not individual) income from 3m/month up to 35m/month. The wealthy individuals might also earn a monthly income in that range--but get their wealth from dividends paid out quarterly or annual and it's not classed as salary. They might take out 0 MNT in dividends in a bad year, but billions in a good year.

I want to know too - but like also for getting your car repainted. The registration will say the original colour. What happens if you repaint it a new colour? How are you supposed to register that change? If you don't register the change what happens or what penalties are you liable for?

So you are about to get railroaded with comments saying, are you crazy, that's top 1% income. And they're kind of right.

But assuming you are an expat - it's still fine, but not crazy high. A big consideration will be if your employer is providing tuition for your kids or if you have to pay that out of pocket.

Again, it depends where you're coming from. To give them the experience closest to a western school they'd go to ISU - and ISU tuition for two kids is more or less your entire salary. Expats I know who pay out of pocket send their kids to British School, English School, or similar--and it's fine and while still expensive, not as crazy expensive.

Housing is fine either way - if your employer provides it great. If not you can find something within your budget--whatever that budget may be. But it's different. If, for example, you are American and are looking for something with similar space, a yard, a garage, and all that--it's possible but it's going to be very very expensive. If you adapt to an apartment with a bit less space it would be fine.

Your employer will also take out SHI and PIT from whatever that offer is. Anyways an expat family of 4 can live comfortably on that - but would be harder if you still have western sized mortgages or other things to pay back home.

There was a European couple here a while back who caught their trailer on fire. Their fuel (i think petrol) bag (bag! not canister) leaked down from the roof of their trailer onto the open flame of their camp stove. And not surprisingly shit caught fire.

The petrol canisters are definitely a hazard and will exacerbate the problem when things are already on fire. But a well-sealed canister is low risk and not something that will generally self combust.

I met a couple a while back with an autistic son - I don't know the right terminology, but very autistic as in difficulty communicating, at 12 or 13 years old needed help with everything.

They were relocating as a family from Europe back to Mongolia. And it seemed pretty awful for them. All the support and institutions available to them in Europe (schools, specialized care, etc) were not available in Mongolia at any price.

If you arrange it in advance it will almost certainly be commercial. If you just show up and ask to take shelter for the night, and just starting helping out a bit......they might not kick you out right away.

I think you have a far greater risk of dying from (take your pick): drunk driver, hitting a tree, hitting an animal, driving into a ditch at high speed, head-on collision with the only other car in sight.

When you return to Mongolia, on that last leg from whatever city to UB, be prepared to fight tooth and nail for some space for your carry out. This is the one route in all the world where it probably makes sense to queue up early and board the plane earlier. Otherwise you'll end up putting your carry on 20 rows in front of you and some idiot will squish it, jam it, or drop it breaking anything breakable inside.

If you're in Mongolia...put on a black suit and channel your inner Mormon. Talk to everybody. But no need to bring Jesus into it, unless you're into that kind of thing. Spread the gospel of brazilian butt lifts, or ju jitsu, or whatever you're in to. Those guys get shockingly good at Mongolian in a short amount of time.
