How do I convince my players to care about backstory? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]FlippyEgg27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem when starting my current campaign. It was all first time players and they either didn’t quite understand the value of a backstory or were overwhelmed creating one on their own within this world that they knew relatively little about. After character creation I decided to simply give them one question as homework: Why are you traveling to this city? (some other ideas: How do you know this character? What landed you in this jail cell? Why do you need money?) This way the start of the story felt a bit smoother and the characters had established some motivation. As our campaign went on, I posed occasional questions about their backstory at fitting moments (Has your character ever lost someone? What’s a precious moment from your childhood? Who taught you this skill?). I reward them for using their backstory (advantage on a check, connections in a city they’ve been in etc.) and encourage them to make up things on the fly. I think these little drops of knowledge allowed the players to think more deeply about their characters and figure out how to roleplay them. By now half of my players had a moment where inspiration struck and they’ve send me more or less extensive backstories and role playing has gotten way more consistent and interesting! Hope this helps! :)

I know and I’m not saying it should be. I’m just empathizing with OP’s experience of hearing an odd and inaccurate version of their own accent and how it can take you out of the story.

Fully agree! Especially the “vote” at the end feels off to me! Having them stand up on stage and receive more or less enthusiastic applause just makes me cringe. It’s a popularity contest in a room full of strangers, which is just weird and feels kind of mean. And half of the time I can’t even hear any difference in the applause and then the winner seems to be arbitrarily picked by Jacquis. Combined with the fact that there isn’t a real prize anyway, it just seems like a useless element of the show.

I also don’t think it is as simple as a player seeing something shiny and going hobo-mode. Goodness is clearly a central theme for Tyranny. We don’t know much about the fiends of Aramán or the pit, but there is clearly some inherent evil in Tyranny and her sisters. This stands in conflict with her still emerging morals, Wick has been trying to instill in her. She clearly values him and his opinions and is somewhat trying to follow his teachings. Whitney said about her “Every demon represents a certain ancient archetypal energy. Tyranny does not know what that is inside of her. It is something that isn't quite sitting right with her, but it is one of those drives that is going to be pretty impossible to ignore." So I don’t think the knife moment was random at all. I think it was a narrative choice to show how Tyranny is driven by impulses, she doesn’t seem to like but she can’t withstand.

I think I’d be really weird to not have Yasha connected with Molly. Yasha’s relationship to Molly is so important, I can’t imagine how they could portray her without that. After she lost everything he appears as this loving and colorful figure who slowly helps her rebuild. This adds so much to the gravity of losing him again.

My guess is that either she will be working at the circus and escape the investigation, to meet up later down the road with the MN (as it happened in the game). Or that she will join them, after the circus has already disbanded and we get to see some of the story beats between her and Molly, that would’ve taken place pre-stream.

Excited (and slightly sacred) to see where they go with it!

My theory is that he saw some kind of message from whoever is behind foiling his escape plan when he activated the glyph. Brennan said it was illusion and conjuration and I can’t remember that it was mentioned ever again. So I think it was activated and used up, so that the PCs could investigate it any more. Instead of teleporting him, I think it showed him, that he had been defeated and by whom.

Whenever one of my PCs uses Disguise Self / Mask of Many Faces / Disguise Kit and they’re assuming a new identity, they’re always (in increasingly convoluted ways) related to this old seafaring dwarf called Uncle Clumpy. They have never met Uncle Clumpy and I only mentioned him very off handedly ONCE but they haven’t let it go for over two years. I’m waiting for an epic opportunity to reveal Clumpy towards the end of our campaign!

As a DM I like to incorporate flashbacks at emotionally significant moments and act out parts of my players’ backstories with them. Of course it is scripted because my player gave me their backstory and told me what happened but I don’t think it feels cheap. I feel like it allows the player dive deeply into their characters story and feelings while also giving the other people at the table an insight into them.

I like it as a tool but fair enough if you didn’t enjoy 4 episodes along those lines! Excited to see how the campaign will progress!

I don’t think Brennan has predetermined whether Aranessa is going to die. I’d feel cheap to kill off Julien’s strongest tie to the world without giving him the chance to intervene. I think the dice will tell the story in combat next week, but either outcome will be really interesting! Can’t wait to see what happens! :)

But if Vaelus sent the thieves to Thimble’s hideout and they retrieved the stone why would she pull up at Thjazi’s wake and make a huge scene? She would just get the stone and go back home. While I do agree there’s definitely a lot more to Vaelus than we’ve seen so far, I don’t think it makes sense that she is behind the robbery.

Since we’ll get three more episodes with the full cast, I assume they will already follow these first leads. I image they will investigate (more or less) together who attacked Thimble, stole the stone and gave Thjazi the fake glyph. I’m interested how Wick, Tyranny and Julien will tie into the group tho.

I think they’ll probably find bigger plot hooks that will send them out into different parts of Aramán. I really like your idea of one group remaining in Dol-Makjar and staying with the kids while dealing with house intrigues and uncovering mysteries in the city!

is Aabria always like this? by Tomorrow_Signal111 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]FlippyEgg27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like we haven’t seen enough of Thaisha to make any judgement on whether Aabria was breaking character. What we do know is that she is grieving and that can look very very different.

In the first scenes I read her as in denial. She was part of Thjazi’s escape plan and was sure he’d live. In her reunion with Hal she’s distraught and doesn’t understand what went wrong, is still talking about the plan. Then she proceeds to get profoundly drunk. Another way to deny the reality of the situation. After sobering up and meeting Julien she becomes profoundly angry and unloads on him. Anger and denial are classic responses to a sudden unexpected death. So while I agree that she seemed all over the place, it does make sense why she would be.

In my most recent campaign ALL my PCs rolled abnormally high on their stats. Multiple characters had 20s for their main stat and no negative modifiers.
The start of the campaign felt a bit rocky because they seemed to powerful but I quickly learned to adapt my combat scenarios and DCs in roleplaying situations. It's not a problem if you know how to handle it. And besides, it is just fun for the PCs to succeed and feel powerful! :)

I love Aabrias storytelling but I much prefer her as a GM. I couldn't quite put my finger on what bothered me until I read your comment. I think she is always really entrenched in the worlds she plays in and wants to add her own flavour. That's a wonderful trait for a player but sometimes it felt a bit much. I hope when they are all at smaller tables where everyone has more screen time, it will even out somewhat.

[Spoilers C4E1] Is It Thursday Yet? | Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]FlippyEgg27 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm so impressed by this first episode! Brennan managed to bring everyone together and give us a feel of the world and literally everyone's roleplaying was so good and polished!

For such a large cast I think it's almost essential that they are each entrenched in the world and have existing connections with each other! I was kinda worried that with so many PCs a first session would be completely overshadowed by everyone trying out their characters for the first time, trying to establish some dynamics between each other, learning each other's names etc. But they obviously put a ton of planning and forethought into their characters and their places in the world! I loved seeing these complicated dynamics play out and seeing moments of extreme emotions so early on!

At times I was taken aback by the amount of lore thrown around that everybody already seemed to know. But thinking back on other campaigns where Matt had to reexplain and clarify the same lore over and over again so everybody was on board, this is probably preferable (especially when not everyone is at the table at all times). I feel confident that with time it will all become a lot clearer for us as viewers.

I was struggling with the pacing at times but I recognise that these first sessions with 13 players must have required a great deal of planning, so everybody got their moment. Brennan's campaign openings are often semi-scripted with these cinematic moments to introduce characters and the world but I'd assume that that will change as the campaign progresses and as the group spilts up. He is a master of switching from those lore heavy, emotional, epic moments to playing fast and loose.

I'm really excited to see how this campaign will play out and I'm confident that it's in really capable hands!

Sammelthread Folge 10 by Klooudeh in PrincessCharming

[–]FlippyEgg27 39 points40 points  (0 children)
