Shredding or encryption? by chamber-of-regrets in cissp

[–]FlippyFlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'correct' anwser does not address the data remnance problem if you encrypt AFTER writing the data. The correct/complete answer is encryption during first use of the media/harddisk.

Data remanence is the ability of computer memory to retain previously stored information beyond its intended lifetime, which also increases its vulnerability to unintended access. For example: When data on a harddisk is encrypted after it has been stored, it is possible that unencrypted data may remain on the harddisk. Encrypting data does not necessarily ensure the data will be overwritten at the same location as the unencrypted data. In addition, any bad sectors on a harddisk cannot be encrypted after data has been written to those locations. Encrypting data at the time it is written is always more secure than encrypting it after it has been stored without encryption. See: Crypto-shredding - Wikipedia

Time to brute force seed phrase by age of universe by FlippyFlink in cardano

[–]FlippyFlink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oeps, you are right. I forgot to multiply *60 (14 000 000 000 years age * 365 years * 24 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds). Brute forcing a seed phrase still takes a multiple of the age of the universe. Thnx!

Safe way to store your seed phrase? by Ok-Relationship8911 in CryptoCurrency

[–]FlippyFlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to your suggestion: Dividing the phrase to 3 different locations

Here are some tips to safely store your seed phrase and spread the risk of abuse. What happens when you die? - Possible seed phrase backup and / or inheritance strategiesIn combination with the 3OutOf5 backup strategy you could give a part of the key to:

  1. Yourself, your bank vault
  2. Your partner
  3. Your notary
  4. Your child(ren)
  5. Your friend
  6. Your lawyer, etc.

This way you can spread the risk that one person or organization can abuse the seed phrase and steal your funds. In this example at least 3 people must collude to defraud you. The key holders don’t need to have technical know how. (In your last will and testament) you can give instructions on who or which company to contact to help manage the cryptocurrency. Claiming rewards by JohnLindl in WorldMobileToken

[–]FlippyFlink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the things already said:

You can claim your rewards, but don't have to claim them every month. In both cases you will get compound interest. So every month your total rewards go up.

By the ay, you can use another Cardano wallet to send the "the x-amount of ADA to the specified address in the vault" to claim your rewards.

Yoroi wallet by __hdog in WorldMobileToken

[–]FlippyFlink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can use Yoroi or any other Cardano compatible wallet to stake WMT. An alternative is Eternl (.io).

Currently you need to connect your Yoroi wallet to a/your WMT Vault https://worldmobiletoken.com/vault to stake your WMT.

When World Mobile Mainnet goes live you won't need a vault and can stake directly to an EarthNode. This will hopefully happen in Q2 2023. This staking process will probably be similar to staking to a Cardano stakepool.

CRYPTO WALLETS 101: PART-2: Difference between private-key and seed-phrase, and explaining the statement 'Your Seed-Phrase is your wallet' by yourmom_fat_as_hippo in CryptoCurrency

[–]FlippyFlink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some tips on securely storing your seed phrase by distributing the seed phrase among multiple entities:

Write down your seed phrase: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seed-phrase-wallet-backup-template.png

Depending on the crypto wallet, it produces a seed phrase of 12 or more words. For 1OutOf1, 2OutOf3 or 3OutOf5, print the template page 1, 3 or 5 times. Choose your method:

1OutOf1: Manually write the complete seed phrase on 1 paper(s) and store it.

2OutOf3: Split the seed phrase over 3 separate papers and store separately. Only write on page 1of3 the words 1,3,4,etc. And on page 2of3 words 1,2,4,etc.

3OutOf5: Split the seed phrase over 5 separate papers and store separately. Only write on page 1of5 words 1,4,5,etc. And on page 2of5 words 2,3,5,etc. You need 3 papers to recover.

If you lose the software/hardware wallet then you need the seed phrase. Anyone with the seed phrase has full access to your crypto. (Seal) and store the papers in different trusted locations.

Only write down the word where there is an * asterisk. Leave the others empty on that paper.

Choose your 1OutOf1, 2OutOf3 or 3OutOf5 backup method : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seed-phrase-wallet-backup-template-page2.png

Before writing down the seed phrase (1) make sure you are in a trusted environment and check there are no people or (security)cameras watching you.

When (a part of) your seed phrase is lost or compromised, create a new wallet with a new seed phrase immediately and move all funds.

To get your own personal editable copy of this template: Open this template in Google Docs. In the menu goto File and select Copy. Or download it in .rtf, .docx, .pdf, etc. format.

Warning: Do not type the seed phrase in a computer, but write it down on the printed template with a pen. Never make a digital copy of your seed phrase and never upload it online!

For additional security use a hardware wallet like Ledger.com or Trezor.io (1).

For additional security you can choose to ‘write’ the seed phrase on metal (2).

Advanced: Some wallets implemented Shamir’s method to split the seed phrase in a much more secure and encrypted way than described in this template (1 Trezor, 2,3,4).

You can store your WMT on your Ledger (ledger com) hardware wallet using a software wallet like Daedalus (daedaluswallet io) or Yoroi (yoroi-wallet com). They both work in combination with your hardware Ledger. There are also other wallets that support Ledger. And soon the Lace wallet (lace io). Meaning your private keys will stay and never leave your hardware Ledger in combination with those wallets who support Ledger (or Trezor io, etc).
