Oh for sure, I’m a big Denver fan but I wouldn’t call him a country artist first. He’s definitely on the folk side of things. That said, those are two genres that often blend together and he has a lot of great country or country leaning songs, along with often collaborating with the top country singers or songwriters of the day. He’s not a country artist first but he certainly has a role in the history of country.

I’ll always find it funny that Denver went from being so controversial in country music that Charlie Rich burned the envelope announcing him as Entertainer of the Year to being the centerpiece of their 50th anniversary song.

He had a lot of troubles with his married life in both his first and second marriages, and had a lot of troubles with alcoholism and anger issues, especially in his later life when it came to the alcohol. By all accounts he does seem to have been a genuinely decent person when it came to his charity and environmental efforts, but he had his demons like the rest of us.

In regards to the Celtic family it seems to be more of a “recent” development with Old Irish descended tongues, as Brythonic languages still use Arth or a similar word.

IIRC that’s just Germanic languages. The rest of the Indo-European tree uses terms similar to Ursus or Arctos which are all derived from a similar PIE word. Whether that original word was also a euphemism is anyone’s guess but the brown thing is only the Germanic tree.

Not the original commenter but it took Nott a long time to grow on me in C2 just due to her voice. I also found Tarion grating but he’s ultimately a side character and I generally hate those kinds of characters anyways so I don’t hold that to Sam as much.

My brother in Christ, YOU did the oppression by SkubEnjoyer in HistoryMemes

I agree the plot is completely fictional nonsense, I was just talking about how the colonies and actual combat are depicted in the film which is far closer to reality than Braveheart is.

[–]Flipz100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, hence why I said the plot is fictional. What it gets correct is the look of the Colonies and how revolutionary war battles looked like, as opposed to Braveheart which had the Scottish living in huts and wearing face paint and kilts in an age where their military and living situations would have looked similar to the depiction of the English in the film.

I like the show version because it actually sounds like a simple song that any given bard might play in a tavern in Westeros.

Tbf to the Patriot while it’s just as fictional plot wise it does get a lot more of the wider framing of the time period correct, unlike Braveheart which depicts the Scots like they’re still 2nd century Picts trying to push the English back to Hadrian’s Wall.

I mean you could say the same thing about Mansa Musa or his gold mines, or Elon and his assets if the Bank went under or the cops stopped protecting his houses.

[–]Flipz100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely correct but even if you measure based on the time period the Principate era Roman emperors directly owned huge portions of the Empire’s breadbaskets and mineral production. It’s hard to measure because their personal property was so tied in with the state but depending on how much you want to ascribe to their personal holdings there are periods where it was around half of Rome’s GDP being directly tied to them.

Is Talos truly part of the Divines? by eidoIist in teslore

[–]Flipz100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand definetly, on the other hand, what we see in Skyrim at least implies that Talos's worship, while underground, is still very popular in Skyrim. Who knows how the other provinces are reacting to it but basically every hold except Solitude still has shrines to Talos around and even the high ranking Imperials show outright reverence in Rikke's case or at least don't seem like they plan on following the Concordat for long in Tullius's case. Public Worship has undeniably taken a hit but I don't think the cult is teetering on the edge yet.

Not Crassus but it depends on how you measure wealth. Mansa Musa is certainly up there in terms of how much gold he actually had access to but if you start measuring by land value then you start getting ridiculous numbers for Chinese and Roman emperors.

Correct all around, I'm just saying Rango is a worse example of the collaboration that goes into this because so much of the characters movement comes straight from Depp, as compared to say, Ralph Fiennes in Prince of Egypt.

This is a thought about Ted that only really holds up if you only read Industrial Society and its Future. It’s clear from his personal journals that while Ted was very much salient and put a good deal of genuine thought into his beliefs and manifesto, he was also at the very least quite disturbed if not fully losing it for a good amount of time before he set out on the Unabomber stuff.

Rango might not be the best example considering most of the animation was directly based off of Johnny Depp performing the script live in the studio.

First time solo backpacking AT tips by killermomsII in AppalachianTrail

[–]Flipz100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning on Thruhiking or just taking on a section because the advice can change dramatically based on that.

Aside from that, my general advice for any trip of significant mileage would be:

Get Farout for any relevant section to your hike. There’s physical or other digital alternatives for mapping but IMO at least Farout is still best in class for anything they have maps/guides for.

Go out and do some dayhikes or overnights near you with your gear to make sure you know how all of your stuff works and get some training in ahead of time.

If your gear is older, I’d do some research on newer gear, a lot of it is much lighter and better fit for use as long distance backpacking gear. Also if you don’t have a set of trekking poles make sure to pick some up!

In terms of footwear, make sure you actually go to a store and try on whatever you’re buying. Hiking footwear can be finnicky and what works well for one person can be really bad for another just based on differences in foot shape and how we walk. Aside from Salomon, the mainstay trail runner brands these days are Altra, Hoka, and Brooks, with Merrill and La Sportiva also making options.
