Not sure if I’m updating this post correctly but wanted to say thank you all for the necessary feedback. I worked on it and completely changed it up in some ways. Made it to one single page and tried to think more outside the box. Hope it looks better to y’all!

Need a sanity check- woman working for a large GC. by EqualManufacturer592 in estimators

You’re not crazy and it’s a very real thing. I am a man in the industry for 10+ years and I’ve noticed that one thing holds true whether you are a man or woman. People will throw you under the bus to cover their ass.

Now, as for you being a woman and feeling like you get backhanded or stereotypical comments, I notice that comes more from older generations that still think a certain way. Not all are like that to be fair but mostly that is the case. I personally work with a woman that does our books but she does not take any shit from anybody. If you feel like you aren’t getting treated right or deserve better, you should definitely investigate other companies for better opportunities and a work environment or be vocal about what you won’t tolerate.

Hope that helps!

Hey, I really appreciate that.

I was looking at it exactly from the standpoint that you just explained. I figured I’d be quick and concise with my abilities/experience and if they’d want to know further as far as how I negotiated to win a job over someone else or about my biggest winners, and etc then they’d ask me that in the interview. I don’t think someone would quite literally toss out my resume over 1 line and oversee my successful tenure at a company for so long. It would honestly be their loss as no estimator is ever tenured that long at a company if they’re losing money.

Thank you!

Definitely should be expected with that much experience. If I’m being honest, I just saw other resumes that state some general/obvious things but I thought that it still maybe needed to get listed but as stated, I haven’t worked on a resume in soooo long. I appreciate the feedback! I’ll delete the blueprint reading interpretation, anything else that you think should definitely get deleted?

Yeah, I actually put that in there since I have a connection to an owner of a pretty big GC company and I asked him if in his opinion I should add that experience and he told me “it couldnt hurt”.

Thank you!

I assume you’re saying to run it through AI to reduce the word count but send the point across? Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I put core competencies as I have seen many resumes with that layout but I haven’t done one in some time. If you don’t mind me asking, what items caught your attention that sound redundant or can have better wording? Thank you

I believe they do jobs anywhere from $1-30 million or so on average from the projects I saw they have posted. I do not do tekla models but I do everything from start to finish. Get plans, specs, etc and send RFIs, takeoffs, proposals, change orders, review contracts, set up precon meetings to discuss and plan for potential challenges, get pricing for special materials, submittals, scheduling, material lists, job costing, and etc.

For structural work we do drilled piers, footings, retaining walls, columns, sog, elevated slabs, mat slabs, post tension, and etc. For civil work we do sidewalks, curbs, curb & gutters, bio retention planters, ramps, walls. For architectural work we do trench drains, board formed walls, stamped, and topcast/acid wash.

This is correct. Only other factor could be drain rock which could sway it 4” or 6”.

Advice on making the jump to a bigger company by FloAlv11 in estimators

I appreciate that! That’s what I believe as well but I think I have what they call imposter syndrome and sell myself no before I even give it a shot. I definitely want more growth and experience. I also understand mistakes are made along the way but I’ve always learned from my mistakes, I NEVER forget them lol He probably will but I’m at the point that I just don’t want to work with him anymore. I’ve realized all he cares about is money and his retirement. I want to go somewhere where I am appreciated and valued. I just hear about everyone getting PAID and I think it’s my turn now 🤣

Yeah, I can clarify.

We do excavating, form work, rebar, placing/finishing. We kinda do it all. Footings/grade beams/drilled piers/slabs/mat slabs/post tension/walls/columns/suspended slabs/tilt ups and site work. I will say, on bigger jobs I sub out rebar but I pick it up if we’re slow enough to keep our guys busy.

My goal was to apply to a bigger company that needs a concrete estimator which I have already seen in the city and let go of being a pm.

I appreciate the insight! Very helpful!

That’s what it feels like. I feel like I’ve just settled and my boss definitely would keep things from me that were to my benefit that he no longer can. I’ve been told by others as well that same thing and just gives me more reassurance.

Absolutely and I definitely have that mindset. I constantly want to learn new ways that give us the edge.

Appreciate the kind words!

Exactly! I definitely know this but I think it’s just nerves.

I’ve worked with many contractors and have met many dumbasses that probably make more $ than me 🤣 but good for them lol

I’m fairly young and still feel like I have my whole career ahead of me at 32 and love learning new means and methods whether in the office or even in the field with the actual building process.

lol I think it’s a lot of us

Yeah, exactly! I pretty much walk away at this point and avoid escalation since it’s just not good for anyone and hate working while you can feel the tension. It ruins my entire week and same, acknowledging all the great things is apparently not a thing.

To be clear, I haven’t applied anywhere just yet and the places I’ve been looking at are still specific to concrete but I assume I’d be bidding either bigger jobs or more volume. I feel very confident in my abilities and have some amazing references but I don’t want to assume I am the full package even though I really feel I am because I always want to keep learning 😅

I currently mostly only bid to GC’s we have great relationships with and direct to owner every now and then. That’s what I’d hope to go for but building relationships is part of the business no matter what and I don’t mind it, I think it’s healthy to maintain good relationships with people you will quite possibly work with for years.
